Introducing the Nontoxic Nail Polish That’s Sweeping Paris Fashion Week

“I read the New York Times story about the horrible situation with manicurists,” said Ramdane Touhami, the cofounder (along with his wife, Victoire de Taillac-Touhami) of Paris’s beloved beauty boutique Buly 1803. “The toxins in these nail polishes, and all of the cancers and sickness [associated with them], and I thought, there has to be a solution.”

So, when he encountered a new formula for nail polish, one made of crushed shells and natural pigments,  during a beauty-focused research trip in Asia, Touhami jumped at the chance to bring the technology back home with him to France. The result, an elegant 15-piece clutch of polishes in shades from a warm rose to a bright crimson (with everything from azure, lapis lazuli, and violet to a pale leafy green in between), is entirely odorless, nontoxic and removable with pure rubbing alcohol, or the brand’s own lavender-scented formula.

Since the line’s debut last week, the first run has been flying off the shelves. Priced at 31€ (around $35) a bottle, it’s a little steeper than the average polish stocked at your salon, but you can’t put a price on a worry-free mani—or your health. And it’s a win-win for Touhami, too, who had previously forbid his wife and two young daughters from painting their nails, even before the exposé. “The smell!” Touhami groans. Looks like things just got a whole lot sweeter.
