During a recent binge-watching session of Sex and the City, I had something of a beauty epiphany. Suddenly, my lids—which generally only see nude shadow with the occasional swipe of glitter—were craving blue, an eye makeup color that Carrie Bradshaw wears as frequently as she does crop tops. But the closer I looked, the more I realized this style was in fact everywhere around me—from Prada’s recent men’s show, where Pat McGrath artfully applied varying shades of the color across models’ entire eyelids; to Gucci’s Resort collection, where Frances Coombe walked down the runway sporting dramatic azure shadow (the color even crossed over to one model’s lips); to Louis Vuitton’s show in Rio de Janiero, where a handful of girls modeled an electric-hued cat eye.
And though blue shadow may be the latest trend to rule the runway, it’s possible these designers might have actually found their inspiration on Instagram, where models and It girls have taken to posting photos of themselves sporting the cool color. Take Edie Campbell, who donned indigo lids for the Met Gala, or Irene Kim, who accented the inner corners of her eyes with a baby blue crayon. Solange Knowles, too, took a liking to the hue, opting for a light wash of steel shadow, while Leila Rahimi, playing with Pat McGrath’s Phantom 002 pots, paired metallic turquoise with gold. The takeaway? Whether you pile on rich shades of sapphire or brush on a bit of periwinkle, you can never run out of ways to wear it.
