Keira Knightley, Kim Kardashian West, and More Women Who Turn Mom-Chic Hair Into an Art

Before models stepped out onto the red carpet with bedhead—and a blast of salt spray all but replaced the Mason Pearson—there was everyone’s first hair icon: Mom. Projecting the kind of disheveled chic that comes when a heat-styling routine is traded in for a winningly tousled texture—helped along by a toddler tugging at every wisp—it’s no wonder that slept-in strands hold a special magic.

Take Keira Knightley, who was recently spotted with her daughter, Edie, while her long fuzzy layers acted as a multitasking mother’s badge of honor—a gorgeously relaxed look that might have inspired Kim Kardashian West to ditch the blow-dryer for a head of rippling waves and Chrissy Teigen to rework her windswept pieces into a thick textured ponytail while out for a stroll with her baby girl, Luna.

Never one to leave a good hair situation up to chance, Beyoncé elevated her brushed curls with a half-up knot, while Blue Ivy Carter sported sleek braids embellished with flowers for a shopping spree in New York City. Over in Los Angeles, Alessandra Ambrosio used her sunglasses as a makeshift headband. But let’s give credit to the woman that coined the term mom-chic hair in the first place, Jennifer Garner, who showed us that the look is as simple as leaving the house with wet hair—and letting nature take its course.

Just in time for summer’s last low-key hurrah, here are six reasons why a good air-dry beats the best blowout.
