Lucky Blue Smith on Why He’s Over Platinum Forever—And What’s Next for Fashion’s Favorite Head of Hair

Last night, backstage at the Tom Ford show in New York, Lucky Blue Smith was in the mood to get confessional. The pillowy-lipped model and Instagram star had just finished getting his mane properly mussed by hair whiz Sam McKnight, when he reclined in a chair and shot a glance with those piercing cerulean eyes to say that platinum, for him, was dead. “I don’t want to do it anymore,” Smith said matter-of-factly. Indeed, his signature ice-white dye job appeared only on the tips of the hair that framed his face, suggesting it had almost grown out—although McKnight admitted to having dyed that bit before the show (“We made him a little blonder. We like him blond,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. Don’t we all?)

But for Smith, the new season is ushering in a new look. Double process was merely a phase. “Let that phase be that phase and [let’s] do something different,” said the model. The multi-tonal brown with frosted tips has him excited for the moment: “I’m kind of super-stoked with how my hair is lately. [Boy band hair] could be back. That would be cool.” As for the future of his follicles, well, he’s keeping that under wraps. “I’m going to be doing something . . . , ” he trailed off with a coy half smile before stopping short. The fashion world will be watching.
