Meet the New English Rose: Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Delivers the Most Romantic Makeup of the Season

Much has been written about the English Rose—the British tendency for fresh-from-the-garden beauty. But nowhere has the national trope reached such dramatic heights as it did today for the Spring 2017 Preen collection by Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi. The designers’ pagan parade of witchcraft-inspired pentagram-printed dresses, lace-trimmed platform sandals, and power-clashing ruffled separates was accented by a spellbinding approach to hair and makeup, if ever there was one.

Replacing blush, lipstick, and even jewelry, makeup artist Val Garland pressed dried daisies, ferns, cornflowers, and forget-me-nots onto models’ collarbones, foreheads, and cheeks, but the most poetic gesture was when delicate roses were concentrated only on the lips (giving the cultish Rosebud Salve a run for its money). The whimsical spectacle gave the appearance of having rolled around in a field of wildflowers before stepping onto the runway. For added authenticity, hairstylist Eugene Souleiman created a roughed-up updo replete with tiny, fuzzy braids and plenty of ethereal wisps.

Fresh off the heels of the flower-bomb beauty delivered by James Kaliardos backstage at Rosie Assoulin in New York, it seems that the look is on its way to becoming a full-blown trend, and perhaps the next wave of festival beauty (so long, flower crown). Call it the new romantic.
