New York Fashion Week just commenced—and already the ’90s are on the mind, with above-the-neck references ranging from PJ Harvey to Tom Ford–era Gucci cropping up on the runway in recent days. But leave it to Baja East’s Scott Studenberg and John Targon to channel another era reference altogether—one that fused the nuances of grunge and classic biker cool with the bad-boy attitude of the ultimate glam-metal icon: Axl Rose was amongst the references name-checked by backstage hair whiz Guido Palau, who was fastening wide bandanna headbands into place. Each one had been dyed and aged by Studenberg and Targon for the show, making them some of the most covetable slices of fabric seen on the runways this season.
According to Palau, the key to making the look modern—not to mention keeping things chic—is to leave the rest of the hair wholly undone. A bit of “oily, bedhead fluff [at the top] adds character and ease,” he said of the slightly sweaty, flyaway texture he was heightening using Redken Diamond Oil. If that didn’t work, New York City’s 90-degree heat, 80 percent humidity factor, and an allover lack of air-conditioning backstage promised to do the trick in the concrete jungle. A hair accessory that doesn’t require dry shampoo to look as good in a heat wave as it does on second-day cold-weather bedhead? We’re sold.
