Lupita Nyong’o’s latest evening-out hairstyle embodies her overarching red carpet beauty aesthetic: bold, quirky, colorful, and rife for emulation. Last night’s Kenzo x H&M fashion show found the October cover girl turning heads with an enigmatic collective of braids woven around the crown like a company of style-minded vines.
The updo began at neck-level with a set of cornrows braided in reverse, each thick, shiny plait edging upward to meet at one side, the overall effect mimicking a seriously sculptural headdress. Colorful, metallic fabric—comingling within the style, as well as containing it in headband form—finished the updo, a nod to the equally bold show and a stylish reminder of Nyong’o’s Kenyan roots. And because the actress doesn’t leave the house before adding another accessory, a set of event-worthy, red-orange plastic hoops framed her nearly naked complexion. Lupita Nyong’o’s only red carpet rule? All bets are off.
