22 Beauty Icons From the Music World: Nina Simone, David Bowie, and More

This week, the trailer for Ninathe Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana, which will come out next month—was released. While the controversy surrounding Saldana’s casting for the role as the iconic singer and pianist remains, audiences can rest easy knowing that Simone’s penchant for thoughtful hairstyles and dramatic makeup will remain pitch-perfect on-screen. After all, it’s hard not to associate the woman with those penciled-in eyebrows, or those expert layers of black eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, occasionally emphasized by the deft placement of rhinestones along the lash line. Then there were the braids, the Afro, the hair jewelry, the head scarves—all of which it appears were handled with expert care in the film. Because for the hair and makeup team, we’re guessing, the subject of Nina Simone must have been a dream—as would be any number of performers whose appearances were as unforgettable as their music.

After all, would you mistake a shock of bright orange hair and dramatically carved cheekbones for anyone other than David Bowie? Curtains of hip-grazing, jet-black lengths are practically synonymous with Cher. But, when paired with an exaggerated beehive and a thick flick of black eyeliner, you’re looking at an unmistakable likeness of Amy Winehouse.

A skill for contouring, golden blonde waves, and a love of dance have even made Channing Tatum into an ersatz Beyoncé. If Nicki Minaj lays claim to curves, then Grace Jones takes the cake when it comes to angles, making a habit of a flattop and dramatic diagonal slashes of blush, eyeshadow, and eyebrow pencil. And twin braids, when topped with a cowboy hat and anchored by a beard, belong to the one and only Willie Nelson.

Here, 22 iconic musicians’ beauty looks we wouldn’t mind seeing re-created on the big screen.
