Shine On: Why Light-Catching Sparkle Is This Season’s Best Beauty Addition

Anthony Vaccarello

Centuries of poetry have been penned about the twinkle of starlight; the shimmery, wobbling surface of calm waters on a sunny day, the instinctual allure of diamonds—whether it’s magical or aspirational, there’s just something about sparkle, a mild thrill that makes your breath catch in the best way. Which is perhaps why, today in Paris, Chanel topped its bouclĂ© and denim collection with gilded, floral brooches, the hair accessories confirming a larger above-the-neck Fashion Week fixation on adornments that shine.

It started in New York, where, backstage at Opening Ceremony, cool-toned, multicolored glitter traveled over ears and cheekbones, morphing models into near–A.I. embodiments through a simple metallic coating. Marc Jacobs also embraced a bit of futurism by way of chrome smoky lids and lash lines topped with silver sparkle and paired—on some models—with an equally light-catching hairline. Tommy Hilfiger’s modern-day debutantes coupled tiaras, costume jewelry, and otherwise naked complexions with flecks of Pat McGrath’s now-signature gold glitter, and across the pond in London, Holly Fulton opted for metallic silver foiling of the lids.

Chunky, glitzy hair accessories finished manes at Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen, resulting in looks that were regal and whimsical. For our part, we’ll be taking an unexpected application cue from Giambattista Valli, who accented models’ brows with a mirror-image line of highlighting silver glitter directly below. At times ethereal, supernatural, and futuristic, these shining moments remind us to catch the light, whenever possible.
