Today, Willow Smith was announced as the latest ambassador for Chanel. A quick scroll through her Instagram would prove why the musician and model is a natural for the role. After all, Coco Chanel once famously said: “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.”
It’s an ethos embraced by Smith, whose innate confidence seems to extend well beyond her years. Who else, at age 9, could have catapulted themselves into the pop culture consciousness with that declaration of visual freedom, “Whip My Hair.” In the music video the preteen sports lip rhinestones, white mascara, a multicolored manicure, and waist-length braids that fulfill the promise of the song’s title. And that was just the beginning.
Six years and multiple piercings, dye jobs, and haircuts later, the 15-year-old has proven herself to be a master of liquid liner, neon pigment, and colorful hair accessories, whether taking an impromptu selfie or hitting the beach with fresh skin and quintessential Californian ease. Last month’s I Love Coco party found the singer in purple-tinted locks and a dot of aubergine eyeliner placed beneath each pupil, while this morning’s Chanel front row called for twin buns and a swipe of electric blue shadow.
With a new next-level wardrobe and access to the fashion house’s collection of nail polishes, eyeshadows, mascaras, and lipsticks, we can only imagine that her looks are about to get that much more interesting. Above, 11 reasons Willow Smith is the next big beauty star worth watching.
