All Clear: Why Transparent Makeup Is Summer’s Best Beauty Strategy

Summer is no time for a full face of makeup. Who can bear to smear a heavy foundation or drag a crumbling liner across their lids, only for it to melt off during a sweat-drenched commute? We propose, instead, that the best seasonal makeup is clear: fresh, lightweight gel and gloss formulas designed to impart an impossibly dewy poolside glow.

Start by gently patting Cover FX’s transparent sunscreen over the skin—the mattifier doubles as an SPF and primer and leaves no hint of grease or an unsightly white cast, making it easy to reapply throughout the day. A slick of Rimmel’s brow gel drawn across the arches imparts a fresh-from-the-surf wetness, while Clarins Double Fix mascara does the same for lashes, providing hold and sweat-proofing power (if you can’t resist layering a black shade beneath).

A clean, clear topcoat is the perfect warm-weather nail polish: Guerlain’s glossy stain comes housed in a palm-size perfume bottle and adds soft rose and bergamot scent notes to your nails. Eschew your powdery shadows and cream blushes for the all-purpose magic of Milk Makeup’s Face Gloss, dotted across the lids, cheekbones, lips, or all over for a cool, wet sheen. And to seal the look with a kiss: Smashbox’s invisible liner provides a subtle defining effect, and on top, The Estée Edit’s coconut oil–infused Cocobalm is a sheer hydrating finish that smells like—what else?—coconut. Ah, summer.
