Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid Get Bangs! Why Fringe Is the Hair Statement of the Summer

Selena Gomez

It’s been a big week in bang world. First, Selena Gomez unveiled soft, cheek-skimming strands, freshly cut on the road for her Revival Tour. Meanwhile, on location in New York, Bella Hadid received a choppy set that transformed the fresh-faced ingenue into a regular Riot Grrrl. The looks have us rethinking our seasonal stance on the lash-grazing style—that it’s a nightmare when oppressive heat and humidity strike, leaving them sweat-drenched and stuck to the forehead. Yet, it’s equally true that the most striking beauty ideas defy practicality, and a full-on fringe might be the subversive hair statement of the summer.

See Taylor Swift, who let her bleached-blonde strands curl lightly over her brows, challenging the sweltering Palm Springs weather. Elsewhere, Alexa Chung and Hari Nef simply swept their lengths to each side, taking a laissez-faire tack that added a playful geometry to their faces. Joan Smalls toyed with bangs for one night, donning a blunt baby doll wig that’s worth a repeat performance. But perhaps the most compelling reason to try a long, mussed-up fringe is the way that it falls effortlessly over statement shades—vintage cat-eye on Jeanne Damas, jeweled Lennons on Louise Fallain. And to really ooze easy summertime cool, take it one step further à la Edie Campbell and sit seaside, ice cream in hand.
