The One Product You Need to Fake Perfect Skin This Summer

highlighter

This summer, supernatural skin is surrounding us—from glowing Victoria’s Secret Angels to ethereal Instagrams filling our feed with the seemingly endless possibilities of Pat McGrath Labs’s culty Skin Fetish 003 Kit. Anyone lamenting the latter’s largely sold-out Sephora status, however, can rest easy: Beauty brands are rolling out a new crop of illuminating products that promises to take your complexion to a heavenly state this season.

“Highlighters are great for summer because they add new dimension and radiance to fresh, sun-kissed skin,” explains makeup artist Daniel Martin, known for his skill at burnishing the complexions of red carpet regulars Saoirse Ronan and Reese Witherspoon. Martin recommends the rose-gold hue of Diorskin’s limited-edition Nude Air Summer Glow loose powder, which he deems the perfect glitter-free pigment that radiates under a camera flash.

For execution, Martin suggests applying your chosen formula on the high points of your face (like cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and the bridge of your nose) that naturally pull light—and shares a cheat trick in case you still feel unsure of placement. “Find overhead lighting and step underneath it,” he says. “Where you see the light on your face is where to place your highlighter.” Finally, an upshot to those Gattaca-style fluorescents we bask in all day.

Above, 10 illuminating formulas that promise to catch summer’s rays in all the right ways.
