Ear Makeup Is a Thing Now: Tracing the Weird Appeal of a Surprising Runway Trend

As Kiki Willems, Sora Choi, and more effortlessly cool models took to the Proenza Schouler runway today, guests might have missed the playful wink to the show’s artistic roots: a flash of yellow or white paint drawn along each model’s earlobe, barely visible as the girls whipped around the corners of the cement gallery space. Mixed backstage, in the manner of watercolor paint, by makeup artist Diane Kendal using discs of MAC Cosmetics’s highly pigmented Chromacake, the look handily transformed each ear into pure decorative statement—bringing attention to an unlikely body part that’s been sneaking into the beauty spotlight for several seasons now.

Nearly four years ago at Dries Van Noten, Peter Philips took palmfuls of cut crystals and artfully arranged them, crafting ethereal jewel-encrusted lobes. On the opposite end of the makeup spectrum were the grunge-rock girls at Anthony Vaccarello’s Spring 2015 outing, who wore a simple dash of black along the bottom to add a bit of edge. For Spring 2016, backstage makeup artist Yadim drew kaleidoscopic glitter along the ear and dragged down to the cheekbone for Opening Ceremony’s Blade Runner–inspired show, while Pat McGrath cast Louis Vuitton models’ ears in chrome one year ago to offset the futuristic clothes; Rodarte’s metallic dragon cuffs and Balenciaga’s dripping pearls and diamonds were equally eye-catching. Here, seven runway beauty looks that make the case for embellishing the ear, giving you more real estate to work with.
