The Secret Behind Rag & Bone’s Lived-In Black Eye Makeup Will Change Your Going-Out Game

Tonight’s Rag & Bone show may have been Marcus Wainwright’s first collection without his long-time co–creative director David Neville, who relinquished his design duties in June, but some things never change—namely the lived-in black eyeliner that has long been the house’s beauty signature. It’s a look inspired by the kind of girl who was having too much fun last night to take off her makeup before climbing into bed—but according to backstage makeup artist Tom Pecheux, even this downtown cool girl doesn’t just wake up with a perfectly smudged, faint trace of charcoal around her lids.

“It’s a technical issue,” he said, explaining that it takes more than just a simple swipe of black pencil drawn along the water line to get the quintessential slept-in effect. Instead, Pecheux prefers to add a few wet coats of waterproof mascara to top and bottom lashes, using his fingers to gently blend the pigment into the roots. It stays on longer, Pecheux notes, and imparts a certain “timelessness.” Just the kind of winning equation applied to the spot-on denim and those two standout slip dresses Wainwright showed for spring.
