If you’re headed to the Meadows Music Festival today in New York City, Børns has some advice for surviving the back-to-back lineup of energetic performances. Before catching the singer (né Garrett Borns) on stage this evening, a proper fuel-up will make all the difference in how you feel while dancing, swaying, and whipping your hair around for the star-studded lineup. He should know: Børns has spent the better part of the last year on the road promoting his album Dopamine when not filming Gucci-laden music videos and jetting off to fashion shows, all while maintaining the groovy levelheadedness of a meditation guru and a crop top-worthy physique even Kendall Jenner would envy. Demanding tour dates often find him waking up in a new city, where he’ll get his bearings on his tour bus when he preps a delicious, nutritious smoothie. “That way you know you’re getting your good, nourishing kick start to the day, and it’s light enough that you can exercise after,” says Børns.

His is a simple mix of greens, a few roots, and a handful of fruits. “It’s all inspired by my mother—she is the one who taught me about holistic health and raw foodism while you’re traveling to center and ground yourself,” he explains. First, a liquid base of cashew, almond, or coconut milk, or coconut water, serves as a founding mixing agent. “You should always read the ingredients in coconut water. It should say 100% coconut water,” Børns says; anything else, and you’re essentially drinking “flavored water” minus the nutrients. Next comes an antioxidant-heavy half cup of berries (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries) and half of an omega-rich avocado “to make it creamy.” Aside from providing a crisp taste to the beverage, a half of a cucumber gives a silken edge to his voice: “It keeps your vocal chords and everything hydrated.” And a handful of kale rounds out the vitamin-filled drink. Matcha powder is added in mornings only “for a boost” that’s less dehydrating than coffee caffeine, and ginger will give the flavor profile a sumptuous lift. But to reach optimum levels of “nutritive delirium,” Børns reaches for turmeric. “It’s one of those crazy superfoods that’s so spicy it feels like you’re drinking this elixir of life.” Just press blend.
