Fresh, Wild-Caught Fish—From the Ocean to Your Door—Is a Click Away

It’s not easy to prepare a home-cooked meal, particularly during the current seasonal surge of work, school, and social activities. And while a number of pre-prepped meal-ingredient delivery services have sprung up to offer a solution for Seamless addicts, the kits’ ingredients quality and freshness are often questionable. So when veteran commercial and recreational fisherman David Goldsmith received one of these meals—frozen and low on flavor (and, presumably, nutrients)—he knew there had to be a better option.

The idea behind Harbour Trading Co. is simple: fresh, wild-caught fish, together with in-season ingredients to make a nutritious meal for two. No grocery store lines; no measuring, wasted food, or even time commitment—every dinner is ready to eat in 20 minutes or less.

But what makes the company especially unique is the way it brings transparency to a particularly opaque segment of the food world, bringing consumers (almost) face-to-face with the fishermen responsible for their dinner. Each box arrives with detailed information about the meal: A QR code leads to the fisherman’s name, location, and bio, so customers can find out just how their fish was caught.

“What you get is an easy and fast gourmet meal,” says Goldsmith, who created and runs the company with his wife, Alexis. The two taste-test each meal themselves, vetting dishes like yellowfin tuna pizza with cabbage kimchi and spicy mayo, ponzu sea scallops with miso kale salad, and American red snapper with coconut curry, to name a few. The service features a new recipe and fish each week, depending on the season and catch, and each meal is overnighted to the customer in a cooled package the same day it arrives (having been overnighted from the fisherman) at the company’s kitchen.

The company even takes the yuck factor out of making fish: Perfect fillets arrive without bones, blood, or eyes that might scare away picky eaters or children. And as for the smell? “We provide seaweed and a sea salt candle to help mask that,” notes Goldsmith, “as a gift from us and the ocean.”

$60 to serve two or $100 to serve four. Available nationwide; http://ift.tt/26VcOKl.
