Winter Is Coming! 7 Cleansers That Won’t Dry Out Your Skin

Winter is coming—and the cooler, drier air is already showing its effects on skin. While switching to a heavier moisturizer is a great start, those prone to dryness shouldn’t overlook the most basic part of their ritual. In other words: It’s time to change up your cleanser. Summer’s gels and oil-free formulas are no match for the dehydrating space heaters bound to invade our apartments and offices in the very near future. But how to choose one that will keep skin happy and hydrated all winter long?

“Look for something creamy,” says New York City dermatologist Jennifer Levine, M.D., who recommends glycerin-rich formulas that aren’t transparent. “Glycerin,” she explains, “aids in preserving your skin’s natural oils” to keep moisture locked in. “This is the time of the year when we want a formula that won’t strip skin,” she continues, citing Neocutis’s super-gentle formula as her cold-weather favorite.

When washing, avoid products that scrub and both very hot and cold water, since either can cause redness and irritation. “In general, you should be washing your face with tepid water and patting dry with a white towel,” Levine says. That’s right: The less dye in the fabric, the better, as the additives can trigger flare-ups in normal and sensitive skin. And forget what you think you know about cleansing. Rather than washing twice daily, she suggests, clients in their late 30s and older should exclusively wash their faces at night, just to remove impurities and makeup. “As we age, our skin’s oil production decreases, so in the morning, a quick splash of warm water is all you need,” she says. Here, seven cleansers to help keep skin soft until the first signs of spring.
