The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Lady Gaga, Doutzen Kroes, and More

Constance Jablonski

If winter’s chill has you dreaming of a sunny escape—and the beauty benefits that come with it—you’re not alone. This week, Constance Jablonski snapped an a.m. selfie on a bright Miami beach—showing off a head of appropriately windswept hair—while Natasha Poly captured her authentically sea-sprayed blonde mane. Artist India Salvor Menuez and model Melodie Monrose also sported vacation-minded styles, coiling and weaving their hair into laid-back looks ideal for salt and sand.

In more traditional holiday fashion, Lady Gaga paired a black fur collar with a seriously smoky eye, elongated brows, and a sixties-inspired bob. Frida Gustavsson channeled Jean Shrimpton, opting for lash-skimming bangs, face framing layers, and a printed neck scarf for a dramatic party look. Of course, adding a bit of glamour to your world can be as simple as updating your accessories—from a pair of gilded hairbrushes posted by Doutzen Kroes to Jin Soon Choi’s festively textured nails, ‘tis the season to scintillate.

See these moments and more in our weekly roundup of the ten best beauty Instagrams.

The Flash Facial Phenomenon: How to Get Better Skin in Less Than 10 Minutes

Flash Facials

A transformative facial sounds like a great way to close out 2014. But for those of us staring down the home stretch of a whirlwind year or a last-minute dash for the airport, the chances of fitting one in before New Year’s Eve may be slim. In this case, consider the latest wave of fast, easy, and effective at-home peels designed to make skin glow: Star dermatologist Dennis Gross, M.D., modeled his Alpha Beta Medi-Spa Peel after the in-office treatment he offers in his New York City practice; the two-step system dissolves dead cells with fifteen different types of acids and seals in moisture with potent youth-enhancing peptides. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles–based skin guru Ole Henriksen infused his Lemon Strip Flash Peel with exfoliating fruit acids to smooth and minimize pores—in ten minutes or less. When the clock is really ticking, REN Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial brightens and firms with a high dose of stabilized vitamin C: Massage it on, wait 60 seconds, and rinse—then dash for the door. Here, the best built-for-speed options to try before the ball drops.

It’s party season—and if you’re debating whether to wear a bold red lip or an extreme cat eye out tonight, why not go ahead and do both? Once upon a time, after all, festive hair and makeup was gloriously high-maintenance—and while clean skin and MOD hair may be ubiquitous these days, who wants to be out-sparkled by a glass of champagne or a trussed-up tree? Dipping into the Vogue archives, we fished out six memorable beauty images that have stood the test of time—then matched them to the modern day products you’ll need to get the look. Offered not as templates, but as inspiration, here are the brightly painted mouths, dramatically arched brows, and coquettish updos that look as party-ready in 2015 as they were auld lang syne.

The 30 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Year

Photo: Courtesy of Solange

Each week on Vogue.com, we share our favorite recent Instagram beauty moments, tracing our favorite top models, It Brits, makeup artists, and more as they announce hair color transformations, snap fitness inspirations, and wait for their face masks to dry. With every photo shared, the beauty trends of the year become that much clearer—so why not pause to take a quick backwards look?

Ushering in a new wave of selfie fitness stars and mindful meditators, 2014 brought with it strong bodies and daily chants, as demonstrated by Toni Garrn’s well-executed tree pose, Gisele Bündchen’ s three-day vow of silence, and Karlie Kloss’ s leggy, athletic leap for joy on her 22nd birthday. Have health and happiness ever seemed more synonymous?

When it came to hair, dramatic yet playful dye jobs brought some whimsy to front row regulars—Lena Dunham debuted her mod bowl cut in a striking white blonde, while Linda Tol showed off a pale, powdery new shade of blue. Highlights gave way to the monochromatic single process, which manifested itself in high-impact tones of platinum, red, and black (best captured in hairstylist Esther Langham’s backstage photograph). When it came to slicked-back, fresh-from-the-shower hair, model of the moment Suki Waterhouse made a case for ditching the blow-dryer, and Solange Knowles single-handedly set the wedding bar for 2015 with her cloud of nuptial curls shot through with a cascade of white flowers.

This was the year of skin care—as witnessed through fresh, glowing complexions and universal face mask mania, which touched everyone from January Jones to Lady Gaga, who de-puffed on the go. Bold uses of pigment took a backseat on the face but they turned up on the palms of Jourdan Dunn and Stella McCartney, who posted their witty, light-hearted doodles. Here’s to putting your best hand forward in 2015!

What’s the Best Candle to Burn This Winter? 8 Vogue Editors Share Their Favorites

Winter Candles

There’s nothing better for combating the early darkness this time of year than lighting a candle and filling your home with a comforting seasonal scent. The flickering, warm flame and soothing fragrance can instantly transform a space, whether for a holiday party or a cozy night indoors. In a way, it’s the next best thing to lighting a roaring fire, which, as Vogue.com Beauty Editor Mackenzie Wagoner laments, is illegal in New York City. Instead, she opts for Diptyque’s Feu de Bois, which is meant to smell like a fireplace, and loves Rodin’s Olio Lusso to brighten a room. Vogue Fashion News Director Mark Holgate brings a bit of winter wonder to his home by way of the company’s Oranger because, as he says with good humor, “it smells like a church altar—and inhaling the scented fumes is as close as I will get to any kind of religious experience during the holidays.” From a gingery mix of tea and tobacco spiked with a dash of mint (Cire Trudon’s Abd El Kader) to a woods- and fig-scented travel size tin that fits inside your carry-on (Cold Spring Apothecary’s Amber Fig), here are eight candles that our editors won’t brave the season without.

The Cool Minimalism of a Winter White Manicure: 5 Nail Pros Share Their Favorite Shades

Winter White Nail Polish

Remember Wite-Out manicures? Even boys did it: sitting in middle school with a little bottle and brush during a long class, and emerging for lunch with chalky matte fingertips. It’s a funny memory that seems to emerge whenever someone sports the color, no matter how cleanly it’s applied.

So how do you make the minimalist shade look grown-up? We asked five editorial manicurists to weigh in. First tip: Think of the color as winter white, tied to the season and perfect for holiday parties. Next, consider the nuances of the shade: “A flat white hue is not always complimentary, so choose one with a hint of ivory to soften the look,” says Gina Eppolito. Jin Soon Choi recommends her self-titled nail polish line’s Kookie White, which has a subdued blue-gray undertone, like the shadow of a snow bank. Wintry themes can also be evoked with a topcoat. Deborah Lippmann suggests her Flat Top polish to take down the shine “for a frosty feel” and Madeline Poole recommends Sally Hansen Big Matte Top Coat “for a porcelain effect.”

Just in time for the first official day of winter tomorrow, we asked each woman to weigh in on her favorite foolproof shade for the season.

#VacationPorn: Makeup Artist Alice Lane’s Detox Trip to Big Sur

Alice Lane Detox Trip Big Sur

Call it the transformative effect of a vacation, but ever since makeup artist Alice Lane returned from her ten-day vacation in Big Sur with model Frankie Rayder and comedian Liz Carey earlier this month, she can’t be bothered to feel stressed. Not even a breakneck sixteen consecutive days of work in New York or the impending holiday has made her feel flustered. “I just feel refreshed—it gave me something,” says Lane, of staying at Rayder’s oceanfront house. “I took care of myself and got back to the things I love.” When she wasn’t taking in the sea-meets-sky horizon, Lane says she had time to hike in the redwoods, cook fresh vegetables and fish, pick flowers, take photos, read, write, and wear face masks. “I had time to examine who I want to be as a woman and reformulate my ideas of beauty,” she says of the trip’s grounding influence. Here, she walks us through her detox photo diary.

Reimagining Your Party Makeup: Why Fresh Skin, Brushed Brows, and Glossy Lids Are the New Glitter

Photographed by Angelo Pennetta, Vogue, October 2011

For a certain kind of woman, holiday makeup presents a challenge: You’re not the type to go for glitter, you don’t do neon red lips, so how do you establish an appropriately festive look that doesn’t involve color? Does the slightly more glamorous equivalent of no-makeup-makeup even really exist? (Pause here to consider what Phoebe Philo looks like at a party.) According to makeup artist Diane Kendal, the answer is yes—starting with the cool minimalism of clean skin, brushed brows, and a flash of supernatural shine on the face.

It all comes down to the arsenal of clear, reflective glosses and subtle highlighting creams that she used to illuminate models’ skin at shows from Alexander Wang to Proenza Schouler and Thakoon for the recent spring 2015 runways. As Kendal says of the technique, “It makes the face look more alluring and fresh, without requiring too much makeup.”

London-based makeup artist Hannah Murray, who uses makeup glosses backstage and on set, agrees. The easy rule to pulling them off, she says, is that a little goes a long way. She suggests starting by considering your features. “Pick one area you want to push a little further with a high-shine effect,” she advises. If it’s the eyes you want to emphasize, Murray likes to apply a beige or nude long-wear cream shadow as a base, then tap MAC’s Studio Eye Gloss in the center of the lid and inner corners. “Layering the shadow underneath the gloss ensures it has something to adhere to, and won’t move around too much,” she explains. Kendal also primes the lid, rubbing a dark brown eye pencil all over before wiping it off with Embryolisse Micelluar Lotion to leave behind only a slight residue. “Then you can pat on a clear gloss, like MAC Clear Lipglass, and when the textures combine, you’ll get this beautiful, soft eye,” she says. Or, skip the pencil and press the translucent gloss onto a bare lid. “It will melt in with the heat of your skin, and just light up the eyes,” says Kendal.

For a pretty sheen elsewhere on the face, focus on the points where the light naturally hits. Kendal usually dusts a white highlighter, like Ben Nye Translucent Powder, on the top of the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, and above the outer corners of the brows. “You get this luminous effect without turning the skin too dewy,” she says.

To give brows a soft gleam, brush them up and run a little Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream through them with a clean mascara wand. “For extra definition, you can fill in your arches with a pencil first, and then do your gloss,” offers Kendal, who describes the finished result as “glistening, like you just came out of the water.”

For a final hint of color, Murray rubs Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in pinkish-nude shade on the apples of the cheeks, blended in with her fingers. “You can build the color, so it doesn’t look makeup-y, but more natural and part of your skin.” The effect, says Murray, is fresh, glowing, and special—but still understated enough for even the most pared-down of party minimalists.

How to Take the Perfect Winter Bath: The Most Transformative Soaks, Oils, and Powders

Winter baths

Winter is still officially a week away, but as far as our thermostats are concerned, it has already arrived. The current climate makes scheduling a soak in the tub less about leisure and more about survival, (albeit of the supremely tranquil variety). When it comes to capitalizing on the luxury of a cold-weather bath, few have mastered the art form like New York beauty gurus Winnie Beattie and Jessica Richards.

For Beattie, owner of the Lower East Side’s Warm boutique, silence is an all-too-precious necessity for a truly restorative experience. “For me a bath is a total luxury that always happens at night when my kids are finally asleep and my house is quiet.” For such moments, Beattie splashes her claw foot tub with her own Warm Body Oil, a sweet almond–oil concoction with an escapist fragrance—suntan lotion with a dash of musk—inspired by childhood beach days and more recent road trips. “It’s really moisturizing and I’m always happy to have anything remind me of the beach, particularly when it’s freezing outside,” she says. If you’re looking to soothe sore, post-workout limbs or flu-season aches, Beattie recommends Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. “I was skeptical, but it really does draw out the toxins and helps relieve muscle tension.”

For Shen Beauty founder Jessica Richards, baths are the ultimate sleep remedy. “It’s kind of like Epsom salts on steroids,” says Richards of her favorite Roques Oneil Therapie Himalayan Detox Salts. “My kids once poured an entire jar into the tub and were asleep within twenty minutes.” For the Brooklyn-based Richards, dim lighting, very hot water, and a good book are necessary ingredients for a successful soak. “I’ve been doing these Pursoma treatment baths—I’m a huge fan of their Digital Detox soak, since my day is filled with technology—and they’re fifteen minutes long, so I need something to read,” she says. “I can’t just stare at the wall.”

After getting out of the tub, both Beattie and Richards suggest moisturizing the skin with faintly scented hydrating oils—Beattie prescribes the handmade, small-batch Parramoure Body Oils crafted with fresh-from-the-garden ingredients by makeup artist Teresa Pemberton, while Richards depends on RMS Beauty Raw Coconut Cream to bring a coastal vibe to her otherwise frost-engulfed universe. After all, what better way to shake winter’s chill than by meditating on a favorite far-flung escape memory?

Lessons in Red Lipstick: Jeanne Damas and the Art of Instant French-Girl Beauty

Jeanne Damas

For all its laissez-faire simplicity, achieving that elusive French-girl level of beauty demands a fairly complex lineup of prerequisites: a preternaturally glowing complexion, the staunch belief that blow-dryers are superfluous, a penchant for cutting your own bangs—and, of course, the ability to pull off the perfectly imperfect red lip. From bright, straight-from-the-tube berries to matte ruby stains pressed on with a fingertip—Jeanne Damas’s signature bold pout brings home a most Parisian point: Whether you’re in denim, pinstripes, or fur, lipstick goes with everything. Just in time for a split-second weekend makeup upgrade, here’s a look at the It parisienne’s best red-lipped moments on Instagram.

5 Beauty Lessons From the Pre-Fall Collections: From Wind-Whipped Waves to the Modern Glitter Eye

Pre-Fall Beauty

If the pre-fall collections are giving great range to transitional-season dressing, their hair and makeup prescriptions offer a unified beauty forecast: Bare complexions will be served with flashes of light, be it a cluster of sequins on the eyes or a high-beam shine on the cheeks; hair will be left textured and untamed—or pulled off the face with the help of a signature headband or barrette; and lipstick, should it be worn, will be applied in bright pink. Here, five beauty rules you can adopt now to get a leg up on the year ahead.

Photographed by Steven Meisel, Vogue, December 2002

There’s something about a winter vacation that feels especially magical: You board a plane on a cold gray day and, a few hours later, emerge in a completely new environment, surrounded by lush green palm fronds or dramatically snow-capped mountain peaks. There’s also the excitement of ringing in the New Year in a new place. Wherever you’re headed, it’s going to be a good one—all that’s left to do is pack. To help get you started, we’ve assembled four suitcase-ready kits that cater to your getaway destination.

Headed to the beach? We’ve got the ultimate sport sunscreen (Neutrogena’s SPF 70 formula, because it’s been a few months since you were last lying on the sand), a multitasking weightless body and hair oil, and a seashell compact that you can flip open while waiting at the gate. If you’re mountain-bound, don’t leave home without Embryolisse’s balm for chapped hands (apply right before you take your first sip of cocoa) and the best SPF tinted face balm so you look fresh for that inevitable top-of-the-slope selfie. There’s also plenty to love for the urban adventurer with plans to explore her own city, or the ranch-bound cowgirl at heart headed to a rustic hideaway. So strap into your saddle (or your heels) and get going. You deserve a vacation.

It’s the most festive time of the year, filled with holiday parties and homeward travels and more than a few sweet treats. Which is all well and good for the soul, but less so for your skin, which—on top of all the aforementioned activities—is being pounded alternately with frigid winds and moisture-sucking indoor heat. The result can be a dull complexion that feels like cellophane and looks like sand. One quick fix? A winter face mask that adds a powerful monthly, weekly, or even daily dose of hydration when you need it. Here, seven stylish women share the go-to formulas that get them through the season.

Audrey Tautou and the Eternal Chic of the French Girl: How to Infuse a Boyish Cut with Sex Appeal

Audrey Tautou

If the perennially tousled Lou Doillon and Caroline de Maigret are the embodiment of the modern, laid-back parisienne, Audrey Tautou is a testament to the timeless appeal of the classic garçonne. Spotted at the Longchamp flagship store opening in Paris, the actress’s ruffled pixie radiated the same tomboyish appeal as her wide-leg Marc Jacobs pants and crisp white Isabel Marant shirt. Red lips, flushed cheeks, and exaggerated lashes added a feminine note, offering convincing evidence that the key to Tautou’s gamine sensuality is a perfectly counterbalanced sense of androgyny.

Lily Aldridge and the Easy Polish of a French Braid

Lily Aldridge

While an estimated 500 million people will watch Lily Aldridge strut down the Victoria’s Secret runway on television tonight with a swingy head of bombshell waves, her sleek evening braid is a testament to the knockout chic of a less-is-more approach to hair. The model stepped out in New York City last night with a slim French plait that had the same understated—yet surprisingly high-impact—appeal as her post-show slick bun last week. And when you consider her trademark smoky lids, tawny skin, and rosy nude lipstick, the Angel’s off-duty minimalism seems to follow one simple principle: Ditch the curling iron—but always keep the bronze glow.

The Best Victoria’s Secret Bodies of All Time: From Gisele Bündchen to Adriana Lima

Gisele Bündchen

Tonight, the world will interrupt its regularly scheduled programming to experience another Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show—the annual runway spectacular that, in its 19-year history, has become as much about its diminutive pieces of lace and silk as it is about the bodies that wear them. Of the dozens of fresh faces (Miranda! Candice! Rosie!) who have been chosen to model the lingerie house’s latest collections, many have become household names—their trademark limbs and abs acting as their famously toned calling cards.

Since the staging of its first show in 1995, the company has known how to generate a seismic rumble with its supermodel cast: It was the famously zaftig Stephanie Seymour who led the show’s original bombshell lineup (dressed in a comparatively demure range of cantilevered corsets, bras, and teddys) before a small group of fashion insiders at New York City’s Plaza Hotel.

Word traveled fast, and by the time the event was made available to the public via webcast in 1999, over 2 million viewers tuned in to catch the lean and voluptuous frames of Tyra Banks, Karen Mulder, and Laetitia Casta spring off the pages of the house’s monthly catalog and into high-def reality.

As the show’s ratings grew, so did the onstage spectacles—most notably the wings, which seemed to require an increasingly fit breed of Angel to support their gravitational pull while gliding down the runway. The result was a new generation of stronger, more athletic silhouettes as seen on regulars Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, and Karlie Kloss.

Here, in honor of tonight’s show, a look back at the best Victoria’s Secret bodies of all time.

The forecast: sunny highlights, slick ponytails, and the occasional discreet flash of skin. Top honors go to expectant mothers Blake Lively and Liv Tyler, who proved that a glowing complexion and windswept waves are always on trend.

Winter Whites: 5 Foolproof Beauty Gifts for the Minimalist in Your Life

White Beauty Products

It’s not easy shopping for a minimalist. You know the type: Everything on her vanity is black and white; her bathroom is curated like a gallery. Bright colors and frilly fonts won’t do, no matter what’s inside the bottle. That’s why, in honor of the holidays, we’ve rounded up five products in palette-cleansing white packaging that will lessen the stress of shopping for the person who thinks less is more.

Take Victoria Beckhams new Nails Inc. polish collaboration: To house the shockingly bold Judo Red manicure shade that she whipped up with the London-based company, Beckham reimagined the standard nail polish bottle in matte white frosted Venetian glass with a slim window on the side that reveals just a flash of the pigment. Speaking of pristine presentation, Hermès’s scented origami paper horses—created by French designer Guillaume Bardet and perfumer Céline Ellena—are a subtle and surprising way to freshen a room, while Diptyque’s aromatic oval slabs hang discreetly in the closet. Byredo’s La Tulipe hand cream comes in a streamlined tube inspired by those you’d find in the art store—and Eve Lom’s bone-colored foundation brushes put an understated spin on your morning makeup job. Click below to see the best winter white gifts for the beauty purist at heart.

The Rise of the Evening Bob: Freida Pinto, Jourdan Dunn, and Rose Byrne’s Sleek Hair

Jourdan Dunn

While we hold a special place in our hearts for the laid-back cool of winter frizz, there’s something to be said for the thoughtful polish of a sleek bob. Spotted at Art Basel in Miami Beach, Freida Pinto traded in her high-shine waves for the easy evening appeal of slick, center-parted, fresh-from-the-shower hair. Also in town for the weekend, Jourdan Dunn hit a party with a smooth blowout that looked slightly ruffled by the South Beach breeze. Offering up the weekend’s most high-precision variation on the look, Rose Byrne showed off the clean lines of her blunt bob at the opening night of The Elephant Man in New York City. Here, three black tie–approved ideas for a chin-length crop.

Watch Lily Aldridge Train for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

holding-lily-aldridge

Tomorrow night, when the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show airs at 10 p.m. EST on CBS, model Lily Aldridge will walk the runway with the kind of ab, leg, and arm definition it takes to look good in a custom bra and a 20-foot pair of wings. Getting there is no easy task: To whip her willowy frame into top form, Aldridge trains like a professional athlete—amping up her thrice-weekly, 60-minute workouts as far as two months out. Thirty days before showtime, she kicks into high gear by hitting the gym or pounding the pavement six days a week for an hour and a half at a time.

The half-dozen supercharged workouts on her schedule are a comprehensive cross-training mix: Aldridge rises early for rotating sessions in the boxing ring at Gotham Gym, on the mat at Modo Yoga, and in the saddle at SoulCycle. Body-sculpting dates with the resistance bands at New York’s modelFIT gym, long runs along the Hudson River, and dance-inspired moves at SoHo’s Ballet Beautiful target every last muscle. To maintain her energy levels throughout the week, she reaches for BluePrint juices and Paleta nuts on the go. When at home, she refuels with blueberry smoothies and fresh vegetable- and fish-heavy meals. On the seventh day, she rests, “You need a down day for your muscles to relax,” says Aldridge. “It’s my favorite day of the week!”

Rihanna’s Neon Nail Statement: The Case for a Bright Weekend Manicure

Rihanna neon nail manicure

Fall may have been the time to embrace an earthier palette, but leave it to Rihanna to remind us that nothing brightens a dark winter night like the forgotten cool of neon. Back from the British Fashion Awards in London, the singer touched down at JFK Airport with an acid green manicure that provided offbeat edge to her ladylike topknot and flesh-toned lipstick. The takeaway? Ditch the usual nudes and burgundies and wake up your weekend manicure with a burst of so-wrong-it’s-right fluorescence.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and More

Best Beauty Instagrams

This week, Instagrammers were individualists—surprising us with unexpected touches that made us rethink the standard selfie. First up was Hannah Bronfman, who may have gotten the most personalized manicure of all time: the world’s most famous logos—from Google to the Yankees—rebranded with her monogram. In Miami for Art Basel, Miley Cyrus showed off a long, silver tinsel wig after her performance at Jeffrey Deitch and Tommy Hilfiger’s party at the Raleigh Hotel. The normally close-cropped singer shook her head onstage and declared, “I like having some hair to flip around.” Karolina Kurkova also altered our expectations of a typical “this is me” pic: She snapped a close-close-close up of her deep red lips and jeweled starburst earring. Elsewhere, when they weren’t dreaming up surprising self-portraits, the week’s best Instagram stars seized the opportunity for some much-needed beauty rest, as evidenced by model Constance Jablonski (snoozing with seatmate Sigrid Agren on the plane ride home from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show) and Lady Gaga, whose cooling blue gel mask looked incredibly comfortable—and conceptual.

Tracing Michelle Pfeiffer’s 5 Most Memorable Cinematic Hair Moments

Michelle Pfeiffer

It’s the last big night of Art Basel Miami Beach, and tonight calls for slinking around in a slip dress with a beauty look to match. For such inspiration, we turn to Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface as the fearlessly sexy Elvira Hancock, whose penchant for silk clothing is matched only by her loyalty to a sheer smoky eye, a tawny cheek—and that immaculate collarbone-grazing bob. In fact, a glance back at Pfeiffer’s film career provides endless lessons in the power of a character-defining head of hair. Whether cooking up California mischief with wispy blonde highlights and an envy-inciting tan in The Hollywood Knights, daydreaming about letting her hair down for a motorcycle ride as the trouble-seeking cool girl in Grease 2, or channeling her superhero alter ego with a tangle of high-volume curls on the New York City streets in Batman Returns, here is a look at why Pfeiffer has earned her place as an iconic blonde bombshell.

The Cool Minimalism of Red Lips and Winter Whites: Beyoncé, Kendall Jenner, and More

Kendall Jenner

With holiday season in full swing, is there a more festive pairing than a winter white party look and a swipe of crisp red lipstick? At the British Fashion Awards in London this week, Kendall Jenner defied her nude-lipped Kardashian roots with a bold ruby hue that stood out against her alabaster jumpsuit, while Olivia Palermo underscored the clean lines of her asymmetrical top and stark center part with a neat scarlet mouth at a Carolina Herrera gala in Mexico City last month. At Solange Knowless all-white wedding in New Orleans, Beyoncé raised the bridesmaid beauty bar with a rich shade of burgundy, while Gwyneth Paltrow traded her late-fall crimson for a cooler berry at a party in Los Angeles. Here, a look at the modern minimalism of a red-and-white palette—just in time for Saturday night.

6 Winter Beauty Escapes to Sweep You off Your Feet

Taking Bombshell Hair to New Heights: The Sixties Influence of Léa Seydoux, Poppy Delevingne, and Suki Waterhouse

Poppy Delevingne sixties hair

It’s only fitting that Léa Seydoux should announce her role as the next Bond Girl with a nod to the bombshell manes of the sixties. Spotted at the Spectre photo call with her long bob transformed into a swingy ponytail (with the help of a stealth hairpiece), the latest 007 femme fatale added some modern French-girl tousle to her vintage style. Not that she’s the only one to break out a teasing comb: Poppy Delevingne channeled Brigitte Bardot at the British Fashion Awards this week with an exaggerated side sweep and a few extra coats of mascara, while Suki Waterhouse went with just enough volume to make Jean Shrimpton proud. Just in time for the weekend, here are three ways to take your bedhead to new heights.

Dree Hemingway Takes the Brunette Plunge: How to Warm Up Winter Skin With a Deeper Hair Color

Solange Knowles’s Post-Honeymoon Glow: Why Good Skin Beats the Best Foundation Any Day

Solange Knowles Art Basel

Fresh from her sun-soaked honeymoon in Brazil, Solange Knowles hit the IWC Schaffhausen gala at Art Basel in Miami Beach last night with the kind of luminous seaside glow that renders makeup a playful afterthought rather than a flashbulb-friendly necessity. Breezing down the red carpet with a smudgy application of glossy cream shadow and a dab of lip balm, the singer’s five-minute face felt as effortless as her brushed curls and well-moisturized limbs. And while her canary-silk two-piece provided a trademark jolt of color, it was her lit-from-within complexion that stole the show.

Blake Lively’s Pregnancy Hair: Tracing the Beauty Benefits of a Baby Bump

Blake Lively

Blake Lively has inspired a cult following for her signature pregnancy style, and her recent lineup of bombshell hair moments has only added to the chorus. Whether she’s hitting the streets with her trademark rumpled waves or the red carpet with a sleek sixties ponytail, Lively is living proof of the added benefit of a baby bump: a thick, glossy, supernaturally great head of hair. Not to mention one that grows with Viviscal-worthy speed: Spotted at the L’Oréal Women of Worth Awards in New York last night with a tumble of waves that almost reached her waist, the actress’s hair (and darker roots) was noticeably longer than just two months ago. Here, a look at how fashion’s most coveted mane just keeps getting better.

Calling all angels! The week’s best beauty moments arrived in the form of clean skin, easy knots, and post-workout waves, as our favorite L.A.-based bombshells continued prepping for the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Across the pond, London girls seemed to take their cue from the glowing skin, graphic eyeliner, and pulled-together polish of Victoria Beckham, whose above-the-neck look made a neat complement to her festive party dress.

The French Girl’s Answer to Bedhead: Lou Doillon and the Shocking Chic of Winter Frizz

Lou Doillon frizzy hair

Just when our Instagram feed is overflowing with glossy-maned Victoria’s Secret Angels who have us vowing to step up our deep-conditioner game and finally get that humidifier, the exquisitely static-haired Lou Doillon pops up to remind us that running with dry indoor heat and a blast of wintery air can yield remarkably great results. The Parisian beauty seems to swear by one well-kept national secret—that a one-two punch of drugstore shampoo and a perfectly bleached-out set of ends will give even the best sea salt spray some serious competition in the quest for convincing levels of French girl chic. Whether she lets her pillow do the rumpling or the car window take care of her blowout, the actress and singer is a reminder that the answer to laissez-faire hair is, quite literally, to let it do whatever it wants. Here, a case study in the unstudied cool of winter frizz.

3 Pro Makeup Artists Reveal Their Favorite Stealth Bronzers for Winter

Winter Bronzers

When it comes to the art of no-makeup makeup, mastering a subtle golden glow in the winter months can be a lesson in restraint: A hint of tawny powder adds radiance to an otherwise spectral complexion—but too much and you’re suddenly outed as a pale person wearing bronzer. In the colder months, “Your application should be very gentle,” says the London-based makeup artist Mary Greenwell (who, as the woman responsible for Cate Blanchetts supernaturally luminous skin, is a confirmed authority on the subject). Creating that softly diffused bit of warmth comes down to choosing the right formula and applying it with a light hand.

The no-fail rule for winter: Go just one notch darker than your current complexion. Rather than shimmery liquids, a modern matte powder blends into the skin seamlessly, and also lends definition to the face, says Greenwell, who is partial to the classic Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons bronzer for lighter skin tones, or Tom Ford’s formula in Terra for darker complexions. British makeup artist Lisa Houghton recommends Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess, noting that it has the “right balance of pigments and never looks orange-y,” while Los Angeles makeup pro Angela Levin prefers Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15. To cut the intensity of anything you swirl on: “Apply a bit of translucent powder first—your bronzer will go on much smoother,” says Levin.

Placement is also key: Winter options should be used sparingly—and most definitely not all over the face (“It’s not setting powder,” Greenwell emphasizes). Instead, dust under and over the cheekbones, around the sides of the face, into the hairline and under the chin for a nuanced, healthy flush. For an overall skin-brightening effect, Greenwell finishes by using NARS highlighting powder in Albatross on top of the cheekbones and brow bones, and Houghton even likes to dot luminizing cream in the inner corners of the eyes for a little understated “glamour.”

For an even fainter glow, says Greenwell, skip the bronzer entirely and just dab on cream blush instead. In this case, the ideal color is “neither too pink or apricot-y but more like a dirty rose,” says the makeup artist, who is fond of Chanel blush in Cheeky as “a nice winter-y shade” that she rubs under the cheekbones. Either way, the perfect complement to a barely there hint of warmth on the face: a gold eye shadow on the lid and berry stain on the lip, which add the right lustrous impact. As Greenwell puts it, “It’s just the kind of look I want to see peeking out from a fur hood.”

Sienna Miller and the Endless Possibilities of a Short Crop

Sienna Miller bob

Conventional beauty wisdom would have you believe that the longer your hair, the more styling options you will have—but leave it to Sienna Miller to make every inch of her chin-length undercut count. Spotted at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards last night, the actress went with voluminous, side-swept waves that boasted just enough rumpled bedhead aftermath to channel her English boho roots. She kept things equally modern with an air-dried center part at a dinner in Beverly Hills, while her slicked-back style at the New York Film Festival showed off the literal wash-and-go appeal of a close crop. Proving that braids can be an option even when a ponytail isn’t, Miller attended the London Film Festival with a pair of Grecian plaits that revealed the shorn nape of her neck. Here, a look at the remarkable range of a fearless chop.
