Remember Wite-Out manicures? Even boys did it: sitting in middle school with a little bottle and brush during a long class, and emerging for lunch with chalky matte fingertips. It’s a funny memory that seems to emerge whenever someone sports the color, no matter how cleanly it’s applied.
So how do you make the minimalist shade look grown-up? We asked five editorial manicurists to weigh in. First tip: Think of the color as winter white, tied to the season and perfect for holiday parties. Next, consider the nuances of the shade: “A flat white hue is not always complimentary, so choose one with a hint of ivory to soften the look,” says Gina Eppolito. Jin Soon Choi recommends her self-titled nail polish line’s Kookie White, which has a subdued blue-gray undertone, like the shadow of a snow bank. Wintry themes can also be evoked with a topcoat. Deborah Lippmann suggests her Flat Top polish to take down the shine “for a frosty feel” and Madeline Poole recommends Sally Hansen Big Matte Top Coat “for a porcelain effect.”
Just in time for the first official day of winter tomorrow, we asked each woman to weigh in on her favorite foolproof shade for the season.
