Perfume master and cognac scion Kilian Hennessy is short on neither charisma nor confidence—the rich timbre of his Gallic accent is best described as musky—but even he will admit he doesn’t know the first thing about color coordination. “It’s not that I don’t like color,” says Hennessy, whose signature line of By Kilian fragrances is known for its luxe black lacquer bottles, “it’s that I have too much respect for color and I’d mess it up.” Enter Sophie Matisse, the painter and longtime friend with whom Hennessy has collaborated on a trio of summer scents. They’ve updated three of Hennessy’s best sellers, the airy Bamboo Harmony and the waggishly named Good Girl Gone Bad and Straight to Heaven—the latter two of which were given a new splash of neroli and lemon, respectively. Matisse’s bottle designs, reflective of her great-grandfather Henri’s vividly hued cutouts, are just as vivacious. “The shapes and colors have a relationship between themselves that corresponds to the fragrances,” she says. “It’s like a courtship.”
