Like any longtime New Yorker, I began the process of unearthing my winter coats in late October, when temperatures typically dip below freezing for the first time. Case in point: Halloween 2012, when that freak blizzard forced me to add an overcoat and Sorels to my Khaleesi costume. (I was an early adopter.)
But this year’s El Niño warm spell, which has kept me from my prized collection of outerwear that currently tallies 13 coats and counting, has meant that a number of these pieces have gone unworn until recently. And in addition to the overwhelming joy I’ve experienced at slipping into old standbys—a fox-fur-lined hooded Sandro number purchased before the brand arrived stateside, a ’50s-era swing coat with a mink collar and pink Bakelite rosette buttons—there has been the equal delight of dipping my hands into the coats’ respective pockets to discover a treasure trove of last year’s lip balms.
Sourced on transcontinental American Airlines flights, absconded with from shoots, and plucked from the beauty closet, the selection of wonder salves remains a godsend this year. Here, a brief tour of my coat arsenal—and the nourishing formulas it would appear I accumulate with similar gusto.
