Tonight, while the world watches models Romee Strijd, Jasmine Tookes, Stella Maxwell, and Sara Sampaio strut down the Victoria’s Secret runway in mere inches of chiffon, lace, and silk, keep in mind how much strength it takes to train like an Angel. To sculpt those legendary curves and seemingly never ending lengths of muscle, these women line up at the gym, barre, and on the Pilates reformer as often as five times a week, earning not only their place on the Victoria’s Secret roster, but the respect of some of the best athletes in the country. “It’s part of my job,” says Sampaio. “We have to be toned all year long, but we intensify [our workouts] for the show.”
To test their training, we asked Strijd, Tookes, Maxwell, and Sampaio to try their hand at the famously challenging Tough Mudder obstacle course. As they swing across monkey bars, climb ropes, and leap to new bell-ringing heights, beneath them lurk icy pits of mud, which, eventually, have to be entered. If negotiating the freezing sludge was “funny!” says Maxwell, Sampaio admits that getting each other out of it was her favorite part of the course. “It’s teamwork, you need all the girls to help. It makes you close to each other. And you get dirty,” she explains with a laugh. Here, watch them climb, crawl, and run their way to Angel Strong.
