#TBT: Celebrating Jane Fonda’s 10 Best Knockout Beauty Moments

This Sunday’s Golden Globes find Jane Fonda nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her role in Youth, in which she portrays—of all things—an aging Hollywood star. But in addition to her storied acting career, Fonda’s own lane of memories features many more roadside attractions, including her stints as political activist, aerobics guru, and full-on babe.

The early-’60s Fonda championed the now-ubiquitous chop, combing her strawberry-blonde mane into a casual bouffant that was the perfect match to her nonchalant smirk—and the Parisian backdrop. A face full of bangs, silken head scarf, and flick of black liner brought Old Hollywood glamour to the actress’s repertoire, though Fonda finished the decade in much more causal guise: two braids topped with a corduroy cap, finished with a grin and lengthy lashes.

Fonda’s political activism is best represented by her famous 1970 mug shot: Arrested at the Cleveland airport (for toting vitamins) on her way back from Canada, where she spoke about the Vietnam War to an audience of college students, her shag (cut for her role in Klute) and knowing gaze were the embodiment of nonconformity, making it an iconic image in its own right. As the decades progressed, so did Fonda’s looks—doll-like lower lashes in the ’70s; voluminous, darkened lengths and piece-y bangs in the ’80s; and a return to her calling-card blonde bob in the ’90s—but through all the transformations, her vibe remained the same: dynamic and fiercely feminine. Here, a look back at Fonda’s best throwback beauty moments.
