10 Aluminum-Free Deodorants You Won’t Have to Hide in Your Medicine Cabinet

Photographed by Bruce Weber, Vogue, November 2006

Whisper the words natural deodorant around the Vogue offices and you’ll set off a debate on its degree of effectiveness compared with extra-strength drugstore brands (whose aluminum-based formulas have been examined for possible ties to breast cancer).

“I think it’s actually working, but maybe I just want to believe . . .” mused one editor, hesitantly, of Milk Makeup’s cruelty-free, lavender oil–infused formula. “After four hours, it’s basically like you didn’t even put anything on,” said a frustrated staffer of another organic brand’s shortcomings.

Wherever you stand on the old-school-chemicals-vs.-new-naturals question, one thing is undeniable: Aluminum-free alternatives have stepped up their packaging game as of late, trading a granola aesthetic for modern, even chic designs that look more like vanity-worthy accessories than medicine-cabinet secrets.

From the blue glass jars encasing Captain Blankenship’s Lime & Vetiver Cream to the sleek, minimal lines of Agent Nateur’s Holi(stick) N°3, this notoriously unattractive natural-beauty staple is suddenly looking every bit as fresh as it smells (at least upon initial application). Above, 10 of the chicest aluminum-free options this season.
