Riccardo Tisci is a modern master of quixotic glamour, and at Givenchy, where he has held the reins since 2005, the Italian designer has revealed a particular fondness for fantastical hair and makeup. Teaming with makeup artist Pat McGrath and hairstylist Luigi Murenu, Tisci has managed to dream up deeply enchanting visions of beauty for the runway, season after season.
Extravagant eyes are a near constant at Givenchy, from a gold sparrow’s wing swept across the lids for Spring 2015 to Fall 2014’s bleached brows, which brought an almost extraterrestrial structure to models’ faces and kicked off a trend that still dominates this season. Then there has been the breathtaking face jewelry: glittering blue sequined masks, the lips outlined with red; pearl, diamond, and jet-black Victorian-style charms dotting Joan Smalls’s cheeks and chin; and delicate lace petals, unfurling over the planes of flawless bare faces.
These looks have been amplified even further by equally inventive hair: A particularly dreamy motif appeared for Fall 2013, when Murenu worked Daria Strokous’s lengths into a melancholy cap of rose-colored curls that matched her petal-like lids and lip, while platinum wigs complemented those barely-there brows a year later. For Fall 2015, a crown of kiss curls matted against the forehead provided an appealing counterpoint to the dripping face jewelry—and sparked a surprising yen for baby hairs everywhere else.
Above, seven spectacular beauty statements from Tisci’s Givenchy that prove how an extraordinary idea can have mainstream appeal.
