How to Look Like a Larry Clark Muse: Chloë Sevigny, Rosario Dawson, and More

Today, at the age of 73, Larry Clark has been named the new face of Dior Homme. In the campaign, the photographer and filmmaker makes a rare appearance in front of the camera, but fashion has been looking to Clark’s behind-the-lens work for inspiration for decades. Namely, his unmatched eye for authentic punks (of the skate, surf, and music genres), whom he has often plucked off the street—and, almost as often, thrust into style’s forefront. His recent film The Smell of Us became the subject of a J.W.Anderson collaboration in which Clark’s cast of young skaters slipped into Anderson’s designs for a photo book. And it’s not the first time his leads have captured fashion’s imagination: See 1995 Kids star Chloë Sevigny take a spin for Marc Jacobs in the Sonic Youth music video “Sugar Kane.”

Who could blame designers for looking Clark’s way? From Another Day in Paradise to Marfa Girl, his subjects’ freedom is seductive, escapist, and utterly enveloping. Picture 21-year-old Bijou Phillips in Bully, all wicked eyes and wild curls, stomping around the supermarket in a bikini top, swimming in broad daylight in her underwear, and shuttling her friends between trouble-making destinations from behind the wheel of her convertible. With glowing skin and sweaty hair, the Clark girl, however doomed she may be, wears the fresh face of innocence cut with a hint of beauty mischief by way of a choppy, at-home haircut (Natasha Gregson Wagner) or a bold lip stain (Drake Burnette). If we can’t embody their lawlessness, we can at least borrow from their beauty rule books. Here, a look at the muses who have inspired Clark’s seminal body of work.
