6 Standout Olympic Beauty Moments From This Weekend’s Rio Games

This Saturday, when Monica Puig became the first woman to bring home Olympic gold for Puerto Rico, she took the news by leaping into the air, then falling to her knees on the tennis court, her braided ponytail trailing triumphantly behind her. For the history-making match against Angelique Kerber, Puig wasn’t taking any chances, securing her hair back with a winning combination consisting of a thick red headband and a simple plait. She was one of many Olympians who dazzled this weekend with beauty cues that were almost as inspiring as their athletic prowess.

Take the case of Simone Biles, whose third Olympic gold at the Rio games was completed with the trimmings of a dusting of glitter along her lower lash line and a crisp red and white bow fastened around her regulation updo—not to mention a vault performance that was practically perfect. Meanwhile, Germany’s Laura Ludwig played her way into the semifinals in beach volleyball with a sun-bleached bob that reminded the audience of where she clocks most of her hours.

Like a speeding bullet, track star Allyson Felix won her heat of the 400-meter semifinal and emblazoned her name in the history of great Olympic hair with a cascade of micro braids that streaked out like a flame behind her. And playing to her strengths in more ways than one, gymnast Aliya Mustafina successfully defended her Olympic gold on the uneven bars with a jaw-dropping one-and-a-half twisting double backflip dismount—and a dramatic application of smoky eye shadow that’s become her signature.

From synchronized swimming to track and field, here are the best beauty statements from this weekend’s Olympics.
