5 Water Filters Too Chic to Stash in the Fridge

water

Not so long ago, those dissatisfied with the quality of their tap water had two choices: a contoured plastic pitcher styled to resemble a sports car, or more presentable (but carbon-guilt-inducing) cases of San Pellegrino. The new crop of tabletop water filters, however, are both stylish and sustainable, with designs as crisp as the purified H2O they produce. A simple, sculptural stick of activated charcoal not only removes impurities, but also lends a spare beauty to any glass pitcher. Soma’s streamlined carafes are made of glass, not plastic, while the filters themselves are comprised of plant material instead of petroleum-based plastics. And the Walter (the name is a mash-up of “water” and “filter”)—recently debuted at downtown healthy-food hotspot Dimes—is hand-thrown from terra-cotta clay and comes in a whimsically painted version that would be a focal point of any kitchen.

Given the headlines of late—a report questioning the safety of the drinking water supplies of some 218 million Americans and Flint, Michigan’s recent bacterial outbreak due to avoiding the local water—there’s never been a better time to upgrade your eight glasses a day. Here, five water filters too stylish to keep stashed in the fridge.
