Never mind the uptick in your heating bill, or the layers upon layers that will soon be required just to leave your apartment. One of winter’s worst casualties just might be your hair. When the temperature drops, “our hair goes through a bit of a shock,” explains celebrity hairstylist and co-owner of Los Angeles’s Mare Salon Mara Roszak. “It is colder, it is dryer, and we are still recovering from the damage we did during the summer months,” she continues, explaining how sun exposure and the drying texturizing sprays that helped create August’s beachy waves have paved the way for November’s dullness. Add static from knit hats and wool scarves into the mix, and it’s a recipe for lifeless locks.

But there is hope, insists Roszak, whose client roster includes Emma Stone and Brie Larson. Your first line of defense, she says, is a cold-water rinse post-washing. “It’s a little more of a challenge to do it when it’s cooler outside, but it definitely helps seal the cuticle,” which gives hair an extra glisten when it dries. Vinegar rinses, from brands like Klorane and Christophe Robin, serve a similar purpose. “You can do a DIY version by mixing some water and vinegar together and doing a very quick splash right before you get out of the shower,” Roszak suggests. (Your shampoo and conditioner will mask any “stinkiness,” she insists.)

After that, it comes down to over-the-counter styling aids—adding moisture to lengths with nourishing conditioners, like Davines Love smoothing cream, and getting to know shine sprays. “I love shine sprays,” Roszak effuses, shouting out L’Oréal Paris’s Sleek It Strand-Smoother Serum Spray, which can double as a light-hold hair spray. “It also helps with static,” she adds. Here, 12 shine-enhancing products to help you get your gloss back this winter.
