“I would be her surrogate in a second,” said Chrissy Teigen recently. The model and social media star was speaking of Kim Kardashian West, laying down in a new interview the great lengths she would go to for her good friend. But why exactly, one might wonder, did Teigen offer to carry the next Kardashian West child?
It was a few days ago that the mother-of-two revealed both her desire for baby number three and the potential health risks she faced—specifically, that the preeclampsia and retained placenta she suffered with her daughter North might return in a more severe form the next time around. “You’re always taking a little bit of a chance,” her doctor told her. “There are situations where retained placenta could be life or death.” Or, as her mother Kris Jenner chimed in: “You could bleed to death.”
Preeclampsia itself is a potentially life-threatening complication linked to high blood pressure, and that, coupled with the dangers of a retained placenta—ranging from hemorrhage to infection—led a fertility specialist to advise Kardashian West to look into surrogacy as a safer option. “Obviously, I do want to have my own baby, but I feel like I truly don’t know if my body can handle it one more time,” she said. Fortunately, she has a next-level friend willing to step up to the plate—one who flew through pregnancy with ease. “I really enjoyed the pregnancy process,” Teigen added. “Yes, [I would do it] in a heartbeat!” Sounds like the next E! original series in the making.
