Reimagining the Red Lip: 6 Ways to Wear Fall’s Most Iconic Color

Photographed by Mario Testino, Vogue, October 2014

Whether autumn is best evoked by the shining vermillion of a ripe apple or the muted auburn of a crunchy fallen leaf, one thing is certain—everywhere we look, we’re suddenly seeing red. And if a classic crimson lip is a time-honored seasonal beauty staple, then a reimagined take on the trope may be the ideal way to brighten up those soon-to-be brisk days.

Before shopping the range of rubicund lip colors that have recently hit the shelves, we sought inspiration in the bricks and burgundies painted onto the lips of some of our favorite Vogue images. Among them, there’s the matte, orangey red of homegrown tomatoes, paired perfectly with model Adwoa Aboah’s signature smattering of freckles; a watercolor just-bitten stain, as seen on Léa Seydoux; and the deepest of matte bordeaux, which simulates a chiaroscuro effect against Amanda Murphy’s alabaster skin. These six women—and the latest shades to match—prove that a red lip can always be brilliantly redefined.
