The Anatomy of a Givenchy Muse: Riccardo Tisci’s Favorite Gothic Beauties, Divas, and Bombshells

00-holding-givenchy-muses

Tonight, Riccardo Tisci will host his first Givenchy show during New York Fashion Week since taking the helm of the French fashion house in 2005. If the Hudson River Park location and collection are new, his famously diverse cast of models (and front row ticket holders) ought to look familiar. You might recognize them by their dark hair and deep eyes, their signature curves, or their sharp-as-knives cheekbones and mile-long legs, all of which characterize the gang of women who appear repeatedly in his campaigns and Instagram photos, who walk his clothing down the runway and the red carpet.

For all of Beyoncé, Lakshmi Menon, and Lara Stones differences, each woman is representative of the recurring themes that weave together the fabric of Tisci’s designs. Something in the strict jawlines, spectral skin tones, and obsidian hair belonging to Rooney Mara, Mariacarla Boscono, and Jamie Bochert lends itself to his architectural lines and dark romanticism. The sinuous frames of Kim Kardashian West, Madonna, and Ciara—seemingly born to command an audience—provide his sparkling jewel-encrusted confections with a relaxed serenity. For the toned, mile long limbs of supermodels Naomi Campbell, Joan Smalls, and Natasha Poly, thigh-high slits, body-conscious cutouts, and deftly employed mesh are practically requirements. After all, Tisci’s success can be credited to his ability to dress the otherworldly avant-garde beauty, the buxom bombshell, and the sinuous songstress with equally skillful sensuality—an impulse he attributes to growing up with eight sisters and a strong-willed mother, all of whom hold varied interests, shapes, and sizes.

It’s really no wonder he holds the same criteria for the cast of powerhouse women who wear and inspire his clothing—whom, it’s worth noting, he often tags on Instagram as #family. Here’s to the neo-goth girls, divas, and bombshells that bring Tisci’s clothes to life.
