Your Face Oil Is About to Go Next Level: Meet Beauty’s Latest Super Formulas

facial oils

Cold weather is conducive to luxurious trappings: think leather, cashmere, fur, velvet, all the surfaces that in summer promise only a wealth of sweat. The same goes for skin care, as lightweight creams give way to ultrarich oils meant for crisp, dry days. Cult classics like Bobbi Brown Extra Face Oil have long held down the category, but a new lineup of miracle tonics out this fall are a cut above what’s come before, with opulent ingredients and chic shelf style.

Offering very real skin benefits, oils are being increasingly recommended by dermatologists for their antioxidant boost, often derived from nut, fruit, and plant extracts that are quickly absorbed, and they’re nothing if not chameleonic, as easily used on the face as the body. It’s part science, part magic: Taking cues from elixirs of unknown origin, oils suggest being in on a secret—and that’s always a luxury perk.

The recently released Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate combines ginger root with sunflower and tamanu oils (the latter is a Polynesian nut); such natural ingredients, which could double in a superfood recipe, set their multitasking blend apart from the pack. This month, Cover FX launches an imaginative series of Custom Infusion Drops, ranging from calming chamomile to radiance-enhancing lemongrass, that can be mixed in with any moisturizer or foundation, and are small enough to fit in a pocket. Still other blends promise overnight transformation: Korres has just come out with a Black Pine Active Firming Sleeping Oil, stored in an opaque black vial.

Two new products, in particular, take their formulas to a level beyond, with materials sourced from around the world. La Mer’s brand-new Renewal Oil is activated with the shake of the bottle, turning the golden clear liquid into an opaque, bubbling mixture of sea-sourced ingredients and the company’s signature Miracle Broth, along with essential oils of eucalyptus and sesame, and lime tea concentrate. Its applications seem to have no end—transforming cuticles and split ends, as well as skin, or acting as a boost to your everyday regimen. Meanwhile, Chanel’s new Sublimage L’Extrait uses vanilla orchids sourced from Madagascar, with thousands of plants harvested to fill each flacon with a few precious ounces of liquid skin care gold. Or rather, for those who are more moved by the fashion house’s couture runway toppers and wraps than a 24-karat trinket: Think of it as the beauty equivalent of a fur coat for your face.
