In Rihanna’s newest music video, “Needed Me,” which debuted this afternoon, she power walks through a seaside town in little more than a chin-grazing bob, pushed back to reveal the gaze of a woman scorned. While the revenge plot may be the most obviously shocking detail from the latest addition to Bad Gal’s oeuvre, we couldn’t take our eyes off her abbreviated haircut.
With the pass of a flatiron and the directional pull of a boar-bristle brush, Rihanna gave her minimalist ’90s bob a no-nonsense androgynous allure. Not that we should be surprised: A glance back at beauty’s favorite chameleon proves that Rihanna’s exploration of boundary-pushing looks knows no limits—including hair length.
With a twist of the curling iron or a handful of bobby pins, even the shortest of hair is subject to reinvention. Consider the metamorphosis that occurs when you shift the proportions of the cut from collarbone to mid-neck to just-below-cheekbone. Better yet, behold the power of a transformative set of bangs. Here, four other times Rihanna re-created the bob of late.
