We’re in a stark white studio in downtown Manhattan, and Julia Cumming is spinning in circles, the fringe on her vintage leather jacket flapping about. The 20-year-old rock bassist and Saint Laurent muse is here to chat about the changing direction her life is taking, which has kicked off with a dramatic chop. “It was to bring in a new era,” she says, raking her fingers through the freshly shorn hair. “I felt my look was becoming a little too expected—it’s more fun to change it up a bit.”
So, it was off to see hairstylist Chelsey Pickthorn at her self-titled Bushwick salon, where Cumming’s gritty blonde bob was first conceived—and where the duo decided to rethink that signature look. Armed with reference photos of Mia Farrow circa Rosemary’s Baby, Sinead O’Connor, and ’70s street punks, Pickthorn took a straight blade to Cumming’s locks to design an architectural pixie with a soft hairline and wispy sideburns. “I like things that are not necessarily androgynous,” Cumming explains. “I wanted to do something that wasn’t just a buzz, but a little feminine—leave a little bit there for me.”
An ash-toned platinum dye job finished the look, taking Cumming back to blonde—the striking shade that helped launch her career and the color she loves best. “You know, I think I was born to be blonde, but genetically, it didn’t work out that way,” she says. “I probably will choose to be blonde my whole life.” It’s a look that will serve her particularly well this season, with a series of concerts with her band, Sunflower Bean, that will take her from coast to coast, culminating in their biggest show to date in California this June. “I definitely like the breeze on the back of my neck, but I’m afraid I’m going to get a farmer’s tan if I don’t wear sunscreen!” she says, laughing. No doubt on Cumming, even that would look cool.
