One might rightfully claim that Kendall Jenner’s most-talked-about feature is her beyond-famous family, given how the Kardashian-Jenner clan catapulted her into the spotlight at a young age. But here, we contend that the supermodel and September Vogue cover star should be better known for her envelope-pushing stance on the nipple—namely, to free it, wherever and whenever she wants.
Perhaps the first known instance occurred two years ago, when Jenner, then 18, made her catwalk debut at Marc Jacobs in a geometric wig and sheer V-neck that obscured nothing. Since then, she’s embraced the free-wheeling look off the runway, teasing flashes of a subsequent lefty piercing in a laced-up halter at dinner, a black tank on Instagram, or a translucent top in broad daylight. Even Coachella became a peekaboo platform, thanks to a lacy black lingerie-inspired bralette and leather shorts.
Of course, being a Jenner means drawing fire from critics who are seemingly unnerved by her brazen display of body confidence—which Kendall directly addressed in a recent post titled Free the Nipple. “I really don’t see what the big deal is with going braless!” she wrote, noting plainly that it lets her have fun with different nipple rings—and implicitly that her skin-baring is no one’s business but her own, as it should be for all. “It’s sexy, it’s comfortable, and I’m cool with my breasts. That’s it!” Can’t argue with that.
