Why Zendaya’s Morning Makeup Routine Is the Ultimate Form of Self-Expression

Zendaya

That Zendaya is the ultimate beauty role model is not a secret to her 30 million–plus Instagram followers, who flock to her feed for playful makeup inspiration; nor is it news to CoverGirl, who hired the Disney alum as its newest face this year. Flicks of eyeliner; layers of lip gloss; and glowing, luminous skin have become as signature to the singer as her voice, because makeup is a very personal business that she takes seriously. “It’s an art form,” she explained in an interview today, speaking about the philosophy behind her trademark glow. “I wear my highlight for myself. I don’t think that some guy is going to notice how popping my highlight is. I know my highlight is popping.”

It’s exactly this internally minded approach that guides her headline-making experiments and keeps her fans watching. “[Makeup is] just not about making yourself ‘prettier’ or making yourself look ‘better,’” she says of avoiding the impulse to hide what might be perceived as an imperfection, and instead follow the whims of her creative impulses. “I wear it for myself because I feel fabulous . . . it’s not to impress anybody else but myself.” And that might be the best excuse we’ve heard for hitting the beauty counter all year.
