How One Vogue Editor Made It Through the New York City Marathon

Yesterday, after five months of training a total of 270.3 miles on foot, Vogue.com Accessories Editor Brooke Ely Danielson finished her first New York City Marathon. Clocking in at 4:17:42, Danielson had more than just the 26.2 mile course behind her. Her race game started the night before, checking into the 1 Hotel for a Zen night of sleep, refueling on green juice, and a 30-minute meditation visualizing the race ahead of her. On Sunday, it was a 5:00 a.m. wake-up call to foam roll, drink a requisite cup of coffee, and meet at Central Park South’s “charity bus row” for the one-hour commute to the starting line on Staten Island. How to keep sane? “For most of it, I meditated and listened to Fleetwood Mac.”

Once the race began, Danielson kept two things in mind, pacing herself, and the cause she was running for: Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for the cancer which affects more than 30,000 adults in the United States each year. Once the race was over, the first order of business? Champagne and avocado toast. “Aches and pains aside, it was a magical day.” Here, Danielson shares a look at her first marathon.
