Like a Prayer: Byredo’s New Candles Will Take You to Church

Photographed by Mayan Toledano

As a Catholic schoolboy, Byredo founder Ben Gorham found himself fascinated by veladoras—the tall, narrow candles, often printed with religious language and imagery, found in churches and bodegas the world over. To light one, whether during worship or at home, represents a request for guidance from a saint, though the candles’ slender shape and long burn time have made them popular even among non-believers.

Now, just ahead of the holiday season, Byredo is offering up an answer to the overwhelmed gift hunter’s prayers: The company is releasing a trio of candles inspired by Gorham’s olfactory memories of his religious upbringing, called the Saints collection. Each sumptuous scent—romantic Rosewater; spicy, eucalyptus-spiked Incense; and Altar, a blend redolent of a historic cathedral—comes poured in a striking red glass cylinder with letters forming the shape of a cross, making for a modern update on the time-honored ritual. While they’re sure to please the more devout names on your seasonal list, there’s something almost sinfully decadent about them, too. Amen to that.

$140 each, byredo.com
