The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Caroline Trentini, Constance Jablonski, and More

Constance Jablonski

The best way to recover from piling your plate high at Thanksgiving dinner is to have a great workout plan in effect for the days that follow. Just take a cue from the many fun, high-intensity gym shots we spotted on Instagram this week. From Caroline Trentini mid-kick in the boxing ring (gloves on, abs out) to Aline Weber flexing her biceps with a medicine ball and Jacquelyn Jablonski powering up with a pre-workout smoothie, it’s easy to imagine your fitness regimen as part of vacation: refreshing, energizing, and even ultimately relaxing. Looking to the holiday parties ahead, make like Ruby Aldridge with a festive silver glitter manicure that sparkles like snow under the streetlights. Because beauty, as Fei Fei Sun says, as captioned under her black-and-white selfie (with a lovely, graphic cat eye, may we add), is about making yourself happier.

Best Friends With a Shared Beauty Look: Suki Waterhouse, Georgia May Jagger, and More

Suki Waterhouse and Georgia May Jagger

Best friendship is based on more than shared interests; it’s a sociological fact that people bond with those who look like they do. This tendency is called homophily (“love of the same”) and it explains why spouses often reflect each other’s characteristics, why dog owners sometimes resemble their pets, and why you may do a double take when you see a pair of close friends.

It makes sense, if you think about it. In the case of Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin, who are often spotted together on the streets of L.A., cultivating easy blonde beach waves and a healthy glow seems like a reflection of time spent on the California coast. The same goes for Sam Rollinson and Charlotte Wiggins—British models, roommates, and besties—whose mutually perfect porcelain skin, pale pink lips, and fine, rumpled hair are the hallmarks of an English Rose.

For new pals Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift, it seems only natural that a similarly elegant sensibility would foster their bond—turning up in their matching cat eyes, brushes waves, and long, lean physiques. And while Suki Waterhouse and Georgia May Jagger favor slept-in hair and extreme eyelashes for day, they prefer groomed blonde brows and perfectly drawn mouths when it comes to evening glamour: the mark of close friends who swipe on their lip color and go—always together, of course.

The Easy Charm of the Off-Duty Topknot: Kendall Jenner, Rita Ora, and More

Photo: Splash News

While Rihanna showed off the ladylike appeal of a neat high bun last week, a more laid-back iteration of the style has been cropping up on the heads of fashion’s favorite off-duty beauties. Outdoors for a stroll on a chilly day in New York City, Jessica Hart leaned into the static-inducing winter air with a fuzzy topknot that felt as cozy as her oversize sweater and lived-in jeans—a paparazzi-proof airport strategy that Poppy Delevingne also employed at LAX with her hair piled high into a woolly twist. Over in West Hollywood, Rita Ora spiraled her blonde locks into a shiny, slightly off-kilter coil that balanced sporty and stylish, much like her leather tracksuit. And fellow California girls Kendall Jenner and Gwen Stefani took the look out for a casual spin. Just in time for a Thanksgiving weekend spent lazing around the house, here’s to the instant charm of a cheerful topknot.

Lessons in Laid-Back Travel Beauty: Lily Aldridge, Jourdan Dunn, and Beyond

Lily Aldridge

Between pre-dawn packing and that crazed half-day at the office, arriving at the airport today with put-together elegance may seem like a logistical impossibility. But judging by some of fashion’s most well-traveled beauties, a five-minute makeup job and simple hair are really all you need to get to the gate looking your best. Consider Lily Aldridge and Emma Watson, who racked up frequent flyer miles in easy waves and minimal makeup that felt as uncomplicated as a cozy sweater and flats. Marion Cotillards dewy complexion and rosy lips offered up proof that a dab of tinted moisturizer and lip balm are as much of a winning strategy for dry cabin air as a static-obscuring fedora, while Kristen Stewart relied on a bright yellow beanie and nude lipstick to lend stylish purpose to her sweatshirt and jeans. Meanwhile, Jourdan Dunns high-beam skin suggested that, more than makeup, an in-flight application of supercharged face cream may be the secret to disembarking with a well-rested glow—but if a red-eye gets the best of you, make like Jessica Chastain or Amal Clooney and enjoy the foolproof glamour of a swipe of bright lipstick and a blast of dry shampoo. Just in time for the Thanksgiving holidays, here are a few lessons in laid-back travel beauty.

Team Natural: Why Halle Berry’s Lawsuit over Her Daughter’s Hair Matters

Halle Berry

When news broke yesterday that Halle Berry had again taken her former partner Gabriel Aubry to court over co-parenting issues, it seemed like easy celebrity tabloid fodder. The two have been in heated disputes over joint custody issues involving their six-year-old daughter, Nahla, before. But this proved to be different: Berry reportedly alleged that Aubry had presumptively straightened and added highlights to Nahla’s head of curls without Berry’s consent. According to reports, the actress found the move to be, in her words, an attempt on Aubry’s part to stifle Nahla’s biracial identity.

As an Academy Award–winning actress, longtime spokeswoman for Revlon, and African American woman working within Hollywood’s image-focused business, Halle Berry’s career is not divorced from preconceived standards of beauty, but has directly challenged them. The star has broken down a myriad of doors for black female entertainers and, along the way, helped make the idea of, say, Lupita Nyong’o winning both an Oscar and a Lancôme beauty contract feel like the norm, rather than the exception to the rule. Is it any surprise then that Berry would be so proactive when it comes to the perceived white-washing of her own daughter’s appearance?

The judge in Berry’s case ultimately ruled that Nahla’s hair is not to be altered from its natural state by either parent—a decision that has broad-reaching implications extending beyond the realm of beauty: Imagine your afro or head of curls being lawfully protected from manipulation. It’s a small, but significant win, considering the growing conversation around the topic of black hair—for instance, the recent online petition calling for Blue Ivy Carter’s puffs to be tamed. While the act of criticizing a small child’s appearance seems particularly cruel, and the petition’s creator later claimed that it was a joke, recent photos of the two-year-old reveal her afro pulled into tightly wound buns and plaits—a sign, perhaps, of the sizable pressure that society still exerts on such matters of aesthetics.

And what about grown women who ostensibly don’t have the right to choose how to style their own hair? Interestingly enough, another online petition rose up around the policing of black hair earlier this year, but the uproar it evoked was used to call into question the U.S. Army’s new restrictive appearance policies, entitled Army Regulation 670-1. These policies, while never directly stratifying along racial or gender lines, forbade army personnel from donning twists or dreadlocks—unauthorized hairstyles that seemed to infer a particular group. In fact, it left many black female soldiers feeling isolated and largely misunderstood; the policy swiftly went under review and has since been revised.

The barrage of online petitions and policies concerning black hair—many of which are an attempt to restrain it—make Berry’s case still more symbolic, as the resurgence of the natural hair movement in recent years eschews century-old methods of chemically straightening black hair. It was Blue Ivy’s aunt, Solange Knowles, after all, who nearly broke the Internet with the styling of her wedding day afro just last week. Model Imaan Hammams calling card is her bountiful curls, while prime-time heroines played by Kerry Washington (Scandal), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), and Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish) have all donned their natural curls onscreen.

These representations within broader culture may appear few and far between, but they shift the conversation about beauty entirely for black women. It is not necessarily an argument about privileging straight versus curly hair, or determining whether our appearance needs to be patently altered. As Berry’s suit drilled home, it’s about embracing the power of determining a beauty ideal all our own.

The Women of Peter Lindbergh: 14 Supermodel Portraits from the Iconic Photographer

Estelle Lefébure, Karen Alexander, Rachel Williams, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, and Christy Turlington

Before the smoky eye reached decade-defining levels of ubiquity, there were Peter Lindberghs sooty-lidded nineties muses—raw, powerful beauties like Nadja Auermann and Tatjana Patitz, whose bronze skin and sprinkling of freckles he captured with black-and-white cinematic intensity. It was Lindbergh, too, who helped launch the supermodel era with his troupe of bare-faced newcomers (including Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista ) in his first spread for Vogue in 1988—championing a more natural definition of bombshell beauty and a lived-in ease that resonated with his celebrated subjects. More recently, the photographer—whose current exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Paris was recently extended through December—has turned his lens on modern day It girls Edie Campbell, Arizona Muse, and Joan Smalls with equal success. Here, in honor of his 69th birthday, a look at fourteen of our favorite Peter Lindbergh beauty moments.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Cara Delevingne, Solange Knowles, and More

Solange Knowles

These days, experimenting with a new beauty look means that you can get instant feedback, and the week’s best Instagrams were all about sharing your style from the head down. Jewelry designer Michelle Elie traded her signature slicked-back hair for a handful of slender plaits, while model Georgia May Jagger tried out a relaxed bun strung up with braids. Solange Knowles crowned her curls with a strikingly pretty dusting of baby’s breath in honor of her wedding weekend and Magdalena Jasek debuted a gravity-defying cloud of ginger-colored frizz on set. Cara Delevingne obscured her signature brows with a mask—although her green-eyed gaze was still instantly recognizable. Elsewhere, Petra Collins and Sarah Nicole Prickett took us back with some nostalgic scrunchie times, and the editorial star Christiaan debuted his favorite new buzz cut. The message: When it comes to hair, you should always share.

The Heroic Elegance of Bare Winter Legs: Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift, and More

Jennifer Lawrence

It was just a few months ago that we were counting down the days until wooly tights season—but after a few weeks of unseasonably arctic temperatures, we’re suddenly captivated by the unfettered chic of gleaming, bare legs. Take Jennifer Lawrence and Keira Knightley, who braved New York’s cold snap sans Wolfords last week, while the perennially bronzed Victoria Beckham flashed her sun-kissed limbs on a chilly night in London with defiant elegance. Poppy Delevingnes long, toned legs provided a lean counterpart to her voluminous faux-fur jacket, while Taylor Swift showed a ladylike swath of skin with her knee-length dress. Whether you rely on a supercharged body cream or a hint of gradual self-tanning lotion to achieve the desired effect, here are six case studies in the year-round appeal of a well-moisturized set of limbs—just in time for Saturday night.

Suki Waterhouse Makes the Case for an Extra Coat of Mascara

Suki Waterhouse

Whether she’s channeling a rock star muse or a Bond babe, Suki Waterhouse exudes a modern sixties look, thanks to her trademark pillowy features and expertly delineated liquid liner. At a Burberry dinner in Munich yesterday, she amped things up with an extreme dose of mascara on the top and bottom lashes and an extra-thick cat-eyed flick. In a departure from her everyday style, Waterhouse pinned her signature Marianne Faithfull–inspired bangs to one side for the occasion—keeping the focus on her fluttery doll lashes, along with a healthy wash of blush and a hint of flesh-toned gloss, because if there’s anything that offsets a dramatic eye, it’s a pitch-perfect rosy nude lip.

Jessica Chastain’s Split-Second Hollywood Glamour: Bright Lipstick and Sunglasses

Jessica Chastain

While her porcelain skin and thick russet hair call to mind the Old Hollywood glamour of decades past, Jessica Chastain offered an appealingly simple update on screen-siren beauty this week. Spotted cheering on her Interstellar costar Matthew McConaughey as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the actress’s lived-in waves, clean skin, and bright fuchsia lips brought a laid-back ease to the vintage polish of her oversize cat-eye sunglasses and colorful Diane von Furstenberg dress. And even if most of us are busy dusting off our puffy parkas, the principle behind Chastain’s modern elegance still holds true: Nothing pulls together a look like a quick swipe of lipstick and a good pair of shades.

#DWW: Happy Birthday, Daria Werbowy! Celebrating the Woman Who Launched a Thousand Céline Campaigns

Daria Webowy Celine Campaigns Juergen Teller

Today, in honor of Daria Werbowys 31st birthday, we’re dedicating our third #DWW to her cultish Céline campaigns. After all, as remarkable as her modeling portfolio may be—Werbowy has played muse to every photographer from Helmut Newton to Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin—it’s her seven-season collaboration with the house’s creative director Phoebe Philo and photographer Juergen Teller that has defined the look of the moment. First debuting in the company’s spring 2011 ad, Daria helped to usher in a new wave of modern, approachable luxury—her makeup-free skin and finger-raked bun as coolly real-world wearable as Philo’s well-tailored separates. Whether captured brimming over the edge of a bathtub (spring 2013) or combed back and gleaming like her leather tunic (fall 2012), the model’s choppy, wavy bob induced a near universal need-it-now reaction with its air-dried ease and signature layers. Even wearing high-impact red lipstick, an oversize bow, or lashings of off-kilter eyeliner, she managed to convey the precise mix of irreverence and practicality that our complicated times crave. Perhaps it’s the sense that Werbowy herself has come into her own, quietly managing her powerhouse career while devoting herself to travel, photography, surfing, and sailing, that proves so convincing. Here, a look at Werbowy’s best beauty moments from the Céline campaigns.

Rihanna’s Elegant Edge: Oxblood Lips and an Easy Topknot

Rihanna

After channeling Olivia Pope at the White House last week in a tailored look and a pretty yet practical bun, it seems that fashion’s favorite quick-change artist Rihanna isn’t done playing with the allure of ladylike power dressing. Spotted at a MAC AIDS Fund event in Los Angeles last night, the singer paired her pink gingham Altuzarra two-piece with a soft, polished topknot and eyelash-skimming bangs—a look that might have felt demure if it weren’t for her swipe of matte deep bordeaux lipstick. Factor in her tattoo-revealing plunging neckline and it’s clear that in Rihanna’s hands, even the most feminine style has an edge.

The Surprising Range of Jennifer Lawrence’s Wavy Bob: 3 Takes on the Chin-Length Crop

Jennifer Lawrence Hair

For Jennifer Lawrence, what started out as a masterfully grown-out pixie has become a surprisingly versatile asset of a textured bob in her recent lineup of camera-ready looks while promoting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1. During the New York leg of her press tour, the actress stepped out with center-parted waves that had the same easygoing appeal as her darker roots and thick, blonde surfer highlights, while her simple half-up style during a recent television appearance kept the focus on her tawny glow and pale pink lips. Lawrence even coaxed her short crop into a gravity-defying updo, giving the illusion of longer hair with a cinched bouffant that left out a few face-framing pieces at the film’s L.A. premiere. Here, three ways to work a chin-length crop.

5 Models on the Stealth Products They Use to Treat Dry Hair and Winter Frizz

Anti Frizz Secrets

Welcome to the part of fall where it feels like winter—and not only do you feel the beginnings of a frosty season, but your hair feels it, too. The result? Dehydrated, straw-worthy strands, devoid of any hint of shine, that create a crown of brittle split ends and a semi-permanent halo of frizz. Like any good strategy for beating the cold weather, the best thing to do is to arm yourself against the frost with some sort of insulation—so why not do the same thing for your hair? Here, five models talk about the products that protect their strands from the deep freeze—and keep their high-gloss summer sheen going all season long.

How to Eat What You Want—and Stay Healthy—This Holiday Season

Photographed by Eric Boman, Vogue, November 2014

With party season just around the corner, it goes without saying that a sudden spike in holiday cheer may be accompanied by a corresponding surge in caloric intake. Packing your own juice cleanse for the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, or the month-long flurry of parties that follows, isn’t exactly practical (or fun). Fortunately Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise, founders of the healthy food delivery service Sakara Life (which counts models Lily Aldridge, Erin Heatherton, and Chrissy Teigen as clients), have an infallible and refreshing strategy for enjoying every festive dinner invitation on your calendar.

“Our number one rule for holiday parties is that there are no rules,” says Tingle. Which is to say that rather than arming yourself with a hard set of dos and don’ts, you will have more success if you switch your focus to enjoying the party. “The stress and guilt is where people get into trouble,” explains DuBoise. “Remember that this will pass—and next week you can hit the reset button with a cleanse.” With that in mind, there are certain guidelines that can help you fearlessly raise your glass and fork in the name of seasonal merriment.

• “The buffet is the danger zone,” admits Tingle, pointing out that arriving hungry and filling a plate with a little bit of everything on the table can easily spiral into more food than you bargained for. She suggests dodging the scenario by snacking on something light before the party begins, like a portion of spaghetti squash and kale, to satiate cravings before you start dipping into the hors d’oeuvres and cheese.

• If a seated dinner is on the itinerary, DuBoise and Tingle dig into a salad or side vegetable dish as soon as they sit down to distract from the bread basket’s allure. But for ordering an entrée, both women suggest eating what you want. If the mac and cheese with truffle oil is beckoning, for example, order one to share with the table. “You only really ever want a few bites of those things anyway,” says DuBoise, who adds that relegating yourself to the least caloric foods will most likely lead to you nibbling off other people’s plates (or wishing you were). You can still feel good about your choices by steering clear of processed foods. “Go for lamb, fish, or anything that’s going to be fresh, nutritious, and made with whole ingredients,” advises Tingle.

• When it comes to champagne or dessert, remember that you’re there to enjoy. Practice moderation by honing in on one thing that you want to splurge on, and sticking with it. Chocolate is always a safe bet, says DuBoise, because it satiates the palate. You can always fit in a workout the next day and load up on vegetables in the days ahead. “There’s no such thing as cheating on your diet,” says Tingle firmly. “Just go and enjoy, eat really well tomorrow, and go to Physique 57. One week of parties is not going to kill you.”

The Bride Wore Red Lipstick: Solange’s Modern Beauty Minimalism

Solange Knowles wedding beauty

If Solanges penchant for offsetting an all-white palette with bold lips has become something of a sartorial thumbprint, her wedding in New Orleans over the weekend offered a master class in the look. Fluffed into a cloud of curls, the musician’s hair exuded the same seventies-inflected glamour as her caped Humberto Leon for Kenzo gown, while a graphic pop of matte red lipstick infused the style with a crisp, modern elegance. It’s safe to say that unconventional brides will have plenty of chic inspiration to draw from come engagement season.

Concealers That Do Everything: 5 New Formulas For Surviving Party Season

Lara Stone Concealers

There is a certain irony that’s inherent to any holiday party makeup job: On one hand, the season’s oncoming flurry of festive dinners and glittering black tie events calls for glowing skin and a bright-eyed gaze; on the other, an overpacked calendar rarely affords time for the things your complexion actually needs to look its best—i.e,. sleep, water, exercise, more sleep. Concealers, of course, have long offered a quick fix: Just one dot can make puffiness, dark circles, breakouts, and redness disappear. But the latest must-have formulas actually transform your complexion by combining supercharged, skin-boosting treatment ingredients—including firming peptides, circulation-boosting extracts, and brightening antioxidants—with light-diffusing corrective pigments. Here, the best concealers to stash in your clutch for Thanksgiving weekend and beyond.

Felicity Jones Elevates the Smoky Eye With a Hint of Sapphire Color

Felicity Jones

Turning up in the form of Poppy Delevingnes pop of electric liner and Kristen Stewarts icy platinum shadow of late, the season’s best eye makeup statements are taking a subtly unexpected twist. On the red carpet at the Hollywood Film Awards, The Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones accentuated her green eyes by tracing a diffused rimming of sapphire pigment along her inner lash lines. With her chestnut bob in a sleek side-parted sweep, Jones kept the focus on her jewel-accented eyes with soft peach cheeks and flesh-toned lips. The takeaway? All you need to get your daytime beauty look ready for night is a swipe of glimmering metallic liner.

Kendall Jenner Is the New Face of Estée Lauder: Why She’s a Natural for the Job

Kendall Jenner best beauty Instagrams

“Instagram is my edit of my life,” says Kendall Jenner in the December issue of Vogue, where she stars in Patrick Demarchelier’s thirteen-page portfolio of the season’s best party dresses. “I enjoy letting fans into my world.” So it’s only natural that the reality phenomenon turned model-of-the-moment would use the social media outlet to let her near sixteen million followers in on her latest announcement. Kendall’s “big news” (as teased yesterday on her profile) is as major as it gets for an all-American girl: This month, the nineteen-year-old California-born knockout joins the ranks of industry stars Joan Smalls, Constance Jablonski, and Liu Wen as the newest global face of Estée Lauder.

A quick glimpse of her Instagram profile provides all the evidence you need that she’s primed and ready for the role. When it comes to an arresting beauty look, Jenner is the full package: There’s the glowing skin, the angular brows, the swingy head of dark hair—not to mention the wide-set almond-shaped eyes and pillowy lips. Transitioning effortlessly between a bold red statement lip and a sharply shaded black eye, she’s a natural canvas for the iconic company’s expansive color collection. And with her skilled mastery of the selfie, she seems poised to capture every last swipe for her legions of followers.

It’s Engagement Season: How to Put Your Best Hand Forward

Kate Moss Engagement Season Hand Creams

Statistically speaking, this winter, a certain number of those in happily committed relationships will find themselves jet-setting to a favorite beach destination or snow-capped mountain getaway—only to come face to face with a palm-size jewelry box containing a certain life-altering statement accessory. Engagement season is upon us, and should your own celebratory moment arise, you can be sure that your overwhelming bliss will be coupled with a sudden surge of interest in your left hand. Thankfully, it doesn’t take much to whip even the most neglected of fingertips into shape in the service of sending your ring forth with confidence.

As the New York City– and Miami-based dermatologist Fredric Brandt notes, the easiest fix is moisture. “In the winter, dryness from over-washing your hands can become a problem,” says Brandt. To avoid cracked skin, he suggests cleansing them in cool or lukewarm water using a gentle hydrating soap, followed by an application of moisturizer while your hands are still damp. Brandt suggests CeraVe cream for day and overnight for its lipid-replenishing capabilities, while Rescue Beauty Lounge founder Ji Baek swears that “La Mer The Hand Treatment is the best.” Baek’s cream of choice also doubles as a cuticle rescue mask, which she explains, should be done once or twice a week, by squeezing a dot onto the base of the nail bed, rubbing it in, and, once it’s absorbed, gently pushing your cuticles back.

For a major texture overhaul, Brandt recommends using light acid peels and microdermabrasion scrubs to gently resurface your palms. “Most at-home peels are mild enough for hands,” says Brandt, who suggests checking the labeling to ensure that a product is safe before slathering it onto your hands.

A hint of nude nail color, like Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Opaque Nude or Marc Jacobs’s Madame, gives hands a clean finish. But for an even easier DIY polish job, Baek’s recipe for gorgeous “bare” fingers involves priming the nails with a single coat of Rescue Beauty Base Coat Prep, followed by two swipes of traditional base coat, and two coats of a top coat for shine. “I’ve had this as my pedicure since August,” she says of the minimalist look, “and I just keep reapplying.”

Consider that engagement selfie–approved.

How to Give Your Smoky Eye an Arctic Edge: Kristen Stewart’s Metallic Platinum Shadow

Kristen Stewart

With much of the country bracing for winter’s first arctic blast, it seems like a chillier new palette is in order. Photographed at the premiere of her latest film in Hollywood last night, Kristen Stewart hit the red carpet in a metallic blue smoky eye illuminated with a glint of platinum pigment on the inner corners. The look still had the polished punk appeal we’ve come to expect from the Still Alice star thanks to a rimming of black liner, while her sideswept boyish crop and bright pink blush blended toward the hairline provided another subtle nod to the eighties. A cooler counterpoint to fall’s warm nudes? Quite literally: yes.

Rooney Mara’s Dark Romance: Oxblood Lips and a Graphic Center Part

Rooney Mara

Masterfully blending gothic, punk, and vintage Hollywood elements into a signature hard-edged elegance, Rooney Maras latest red-carpet appearance offered another study in dark romance. With her porcelain skin, groomed brows, and oxblood lips, the Girl Who Played With Fire star looked like she’d stepped out of a sepia-tinged film noir photograph. Gently shaded cheekbones in lieu of blush paired with a lace Givenchy dress added to the subversively pretty effect, while her razor-sharp center part introduced a modern graphic note. Now that fall’s dark lipstick trend is coming to a crescendo, consider it a striking alternative to all those holiday reds.

Katie Holmes may have moved back to California this year, but considering her appealing lineup of clean, polished looks this week, it seems she’s still a New Yorker at heart. In town to promote her new film, the Miss Meadows star touched down at JFK over the weekend with a relaxed tousled knot and rosy nude lips that radiated the same casual cool as her navy sweater and Valentino tote—while her sleek ponytail paired with delicate gold hoops and a black-and-white palette outside the Good Morning America studios had all the markings of a Manhattanite. Spotted on the street, the actress gave another display of unfussy sophistication with shiny loose waves, fresh skin, and glossy lips. Here, three arguments for taking a low-key approach to beauty.

Lupita Nyong’o’s Gilded Lids: The Festive Appeal of Gold Eye Shadow

Lupita Nyongo

Is there anyone who has fun with statement makeup quite like Lupita Nyong’o? The Oscar-winning actress pulls off sapphire lids and fuchsia lips with equal fearlessness. Spotted at an award show in New York last night, she took metallic shadow to festive new heights by pairing a wash of light-catching gold pigment with a swipe of glimmering ruby lipstick that played off the embellished trim of her white dress. Factor in her lit-from-within skin and it’s clear: When it comes to a powerful evening look, it’s hard to beat the high-impact appeal of an all-over glow.

Rihanna and the Surprising Wearability of a Face-Framing Veil

Rihanna

From a bold fuchsia dress with matching lipstick to bantu knots and shimmering mocha lips, it seems there’s no look Rihanna hasn’t mastered. Her surprise turn down the Mugler Ball runway in celebration of the house’s 25th anniversary in Queens this weekend was no exception. Channeling film noir vixen with her dark, high-shine waves tucked under a veiled beret, the singer’s matte skin, arched brows, and bright scarlet lips gave her statement accessory a convincing finish. A sign that the beauty chameleon’s trademark high-glam looks are taking a vintage turn? With a look this stunning, we’re hoping yes.

#TBT: The Swinging Sixties Beauty of Supermodel Jean Shrimpton

Jean Shrimpton

While the question of who can claim the title of the original supermodel remains hotly debated, Jean Shrimpton certainly makes the short list. With her wide-eyed gaze, mile-long lashes, and luxuriously thick head of hair, the 18-year-old English beauty first captured the imagination of photographer David Bailey on the set of a Kellogg’s Corn Flakes ad in 1960. Along with fashion lensmen Richard Avedon and Bert Stern, he catapulted Shrimpton to international fame—and onto countless magazine covers—in just a few short years. (The couple would also embark on a highly publicized four-year affair.) Known as the face of the Swinging Sixties movement, Shrimpton’s willowy physique upended the regal, nip-waisted aesthetic of the fifties with the help of fellow London youthquakers Twiggy and Penelope Tree. And while Mary Quant may have invented the miniskirt, it was Shrimpton who made the leggy look a global sensation after wearing a scandalously short dress to the Melbourne Cup Carnival horse race in 1965. In honor of “the Shrimp’s” 72nd birthday, here are six of her most memorable Vogue beauty moments.

Beyoncé and the Art of Dressing Up a Winter Bob

Beyonce

After a brief flirtation with Bettie Page bangs followed by long bombshell waves, Beyoncé is back to the springy bob she embraced last summer. Treading the red carpet at a dinner celebrating the Topshop Topman store opening in New York last night, Forbes’s top-earning woman in music offered a lesson in how to make chin-length hair instantly evening-ready. She paired her well-defined curls with a pair of oversize Lorraine Schwartz statement earrings that made a neat counterbalance to the proportions of her choppy crop, then finished with a quick rimming of wraparound liquid cat eye and a slick of rose-colored gloss. The result was a supercharged alternative to fashion’s recent obsession with undone hair and no-makeup makeup. Because when you’re at the helm of your own star-powered empire, you might as well go big or go home.

Happy Birthday, Alexa Chung! Deconstructing the It Brit’s Effortless Beauty

Alexa Chung

It’s not just her leggy physique and gamine sartorial choices that have propelled Alexa Chung from cheeky TV presenter to the kind of global style phenomenon that sparks trends just by leaving the house, but that elusive quality that runs through her lineup of rumple-haired, dewy-skinned looks: effortlessness. With her trademark eyelash-skimming fringe and penchant for lived-in waves, Chung’s carefully delineated feline flick or neatly painted ruby lips feel like split-second upgrades—allowing the It Brit to alternate between front-row fixture, festival babe, and East Village style-maven with modern polish. In honor of New York’s chicest expat’s thirty-first birthday, here are a few reasons to ditch your hairbrush, sharpen your eye pencils, and wear lipstick to the gym.

The Super Naturals: Lily Aldridge, Jessica Hart, and Karlie Kloss Embrace Fresh-Faced Beauty For Evening

Karlie Kloss

Suggesting the kind of preternaturally fresh-faced girl who need only pinch her cheeks and dab on a bit of lip balm to look her best, the art of no-makeup makeup is really about recapturing that sunny, well-rested glow that comes so easily in the summertime. Spotted at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in New York last night, Jessica Hart’s flawless skin and faint seaside bronze showed just how red carpet–worthy the perfect shade of foundation and a judicious dusting of bronzer can be. Moisturizer and a creamy pink lip-to-cheek tint were the foundation of Alexa Chungs photo-ready look. Taking things one step further, Karlie Klosss rose gold lids and well-defined top lashes looked perfectly ethereal paired with dewy skin and flesh-toned lips. Meanwhile, Lily Aldridges light-catching eye shadow, gently sculpted cheekbones, and rosy nude lipstick looked like something nature intended. Here, four expert lessons in bright-eyed beauty for day or night.

The 5-Second Solution to Bedhead: Rita Ora, Alexa Chung, and More Embrace the Beanie

Rita Ora

Power brows aren’t the only beauty statement that Cara Delevingne has ushered back into fashion of late. Her love of a good wool beanie has cemented the hat’s place as an essential part of the model off-duty uniform. Once a hallmark of skater culture and the grunge-influenced nineties (see Marc Jacobss iconic 1992 collection for Perry Ellis), the style—which she pairs almost exclusively with her signature slept-in blonde waves—can thank Delevingne for cementing its status as the hair accessory of the moment. Also a fan of the look’s ready-in-an-instant appeal? Alexa Chung, who braved a gusty autumn day in New York City this weekend with her windblown strands tucked under a fuzzy hat—the same sweater weather–worthy strategy Hailey Baldwin, Rihanna, and Rita Ora regularly employ to keep their shorter crops in place. But it was Karolina Kurkova who showed that—with the help of a good knit cap and dark sunglasses—even the most barefaced and bedheaded of oversleepers among us can dash out the door with heroic elegance. Here, a look of our favorite beanie-hair pairings of the season.

10 Lip Balms to Apply Obsessively This Winter

Photographed by Craig McDean, Vogue, June 2011

With temperatures already dipping into very, very brisk territory (read as: freezing) and winds whipping by at gale-force speed in New York this past weekend, the arrival of snowy winter days and all-around holiday mania feels, well, imminent. Another sure sign that the cold weather season has finally arrived: the onset of perpetually dry lips. Given how often most women apply a favorite lip balm, choosing the right formula can hold deeply personal significance: Will you go for a blend of condensed lightweight oils in a smooth bullet form, like Marc Jacobs Beauty Lip Lock Moisture Balm with SPF 18? Or do you prefer dipping into the kind of organic, argan-infused formula found in Josie Maran’s portable pot? The unique melting texture of Sisley Paris’s Nutritive Lip Balm somehow manages to feel superhydrating (yet not sticky in the least), while those loyal to a bold lip will slick on Lancôme’s vitamin E–infused L’Absolu Rouge La Base revitalizing treatment, which doubles as a flake-proofing primer. Here, ten cold weather balms to suit your every need.

A Vogue Editor Shares Her New York City Marathon Photo Diary

Photo: Courtesy of Chloe Malle

Yesterday, I ran the New York City Marathon with Achilles International, as a guide for Tyler McNeil, an autistic young man who has completed four marathons. I have been lucky enough to do the marathon with Achilles eight times now but this was the fastest I’ve ever had to go, as Tyler is a great athlete. We finished in 4 hours and 28 minutes and I was ready for bed! Here is a quick look back at the day’s highlights.

The Stealth Impact of Rosy Nude Lipstick: Keira Knightley, Miranda Kerr, and More

Miranda Kerr nude lipstick

Lipstick season may be off to a dramatic start with a kaleidoscope of statement fuchsias, saturated reds, and elegantly edgy plums, but there’s a quieter shade of pretty carrying over from the recent nude-centric spring runways onto fashion’s favorite mouths: rosy flesh tones that are less overtly sexy than a Bardot beige but feel more put-together than a dab of lip balm. Photographed in London this week, Gemma Arterton and Keira Knightleys matte, tawny lips and rumpled waves were a match made in sweater weather heaven, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley showed off the clean yet party-ready appeal of a fresh cream-tinged pink at a dinner in New York. Over in Shanghai, Zhang Ziyi balanced a graphic winged eye with an ethereal, glossy pastel shade perfectly calibrated to her pale pink jacket. Just in time for rethinking your five-minute weekend face, a look at the surprising range of the subtlest of lipstick colors.

The Winning Courtside Beauty of Kim Kardashian, Karlie Kloss, and More

Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swif

The regular NBA season kicked off this week, but judging by the show-stealing lineup of runway and front-row regulars perched courtside, it might as well still be fashion month. Spotted at the Staples Center with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian took in a Lakers game in full nude-lipped, body-con regalia and side-swept waves, while a fresh-faced, newly wed Behati Prinsloo —spotted with husband Adam Levine—stayed true to her boho off-duty look with her rumpled strands tucked under a fedora. At a Knicks game in New York, Karlie Kloss repeated the sporty look she wore at the U.S. Open last summer with a wispy bun and understated makeup, while her pal Taylor Swift proved once again that you can’t go wrong with a neat red lip. Just last week, model BFFs Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Hailey Baldwin managed to spark more headlines for their all-American good looks than the Knicks’s preseason victory. Here, a look at our favorite slam-dunk beauty moments of late.
