Why Blonde Brows and Black Eyeliner Are a Perfect Pairing

Constance Jablonski

Maybe it’s bushy-brow backlash or nineties nostalgia, but pale arches and graphic kohl eyeliner are having a model moment. Spotted in Paris, Constance Jablonski supercharged her arctic gaze with honey-toned brows and black pencil along her waterline—a favorite runway pairing that Daria Strokous has made her trademark ever since she dyed her flaxen hair a warmer brunette shade. Not that the look necessarily invokes glam rock: Toni Garrn regularly lends it a beachy edge by offsetting her naturally baby blonde brows with a sunny dusting of bronzer. Just in time for Saturday night, here’s to the beauty of a softer brow.

The 6 Best Beauty Moments from the Spring 2015 Couture Collections

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

Craftsmanship and conceptualism are the hallmarks of couture beauty—and the spring 2015 shows in Paris this week did not disappoint. Atelier Versace matched its flared jumpsuits and molded evening dresses with exaggerated, graphic eye makeup in modern shades of black and violet. Valentino found romance in whimsical pre-Raphaelite braids, and Schiaparelli channeled its softer side with fuzzy cloudlike curls. Even more rarified statements—like the sheer black veils covering faces at Giambattista Valli and Chanel—offered a seed of real world wearability: Strip them back, and you’d find a gamine black hair bow or bold red lip underneath. Meanwhile, Raf Simons used the aerodynamic shape of a circular hair ornament to add spark to a clean ponytail at Christian Dior. Here, a look at our six favorite moments from the spring 2015 couture collections.

Elle Fanning, Cate Blanchett, and Margot Robbie Make the Case for a Softer Pastel Palette

Elle Fanning

Braving the outdoors with bare legs may be the ultimate form of winter rebellion, but judging by Elle Fannings fresh pastel makeup, there are less risky ways to get a head start on spring. The actress paired soft peach lids with a dewy wash of peony blush and matching lip stain at a dinner hosted by Rodarte in Los Angeles last week. Over in Sydney, Cate Blanchett also embraced a watercolor-inspired palette with softly shaded lids and a rosy mauve lipstick that echoed the powdery hue of her silk Alexander McQueen dress at the AACTA Awards. And because pale sixties-inspired pinks were made for evenings spent curled up by the fireplace, Margot Robbie played flushed cheeks and high-beam skin off her cozy turtleneck at the Sundance Film Festival. Just in time for Friday night, here are three reasons to experiment with evening nudes with a hint of color.

#TBT: The Evolution of the At-Home Fitness Video, From Jane Fonda to Cindy Crawford and More

Cindy Crawford

Lovers of color-coordination, legwarmers, and gym-avoidance, rejoice: Jane Fonda has reissued her iconic workout videos on DVD. Her timing couldn’t be better: With blizzards abounding and fashion month fast approaching, an at-home (or in-hotel) sweat session is the ultimate way to raise your heart rate while bypassing frigid early morning commutes to the gym.

Reflecting on Fonda’s 1980s living-room lunges and squats, we couldn’t help but flash back to our own favorite workout videos. For some, the early 1990s bring back memories of a mesmeric slew of model-led programs designed to sculpt butts, arms, and abs. Aided by It trainer Radu and a soundtrack by Seal, Cindy Crawford demonstrated her own body-sculpting chair routines in a sports bra and high-waisted gym shorts or a bathing suit and bare feet on the beach. Equally atmospheric were Claudia Schiffers super-workouts, boasting ocean and skyline views for her variations on targeted crunches and push ups. For her twelve-minute callisthenic blasts, Kathy Ireland was joined by a team of enthusiastic participants, while those worshippers at the fitness altar of Cher seemed to share an penchant for sheer black lycra and leg-slimming step workouts.

Fast-forward to the present day, and a new generation of fitness enthusiasts still wants to access the workout of the moment from home—only this time, on a laptop. In recent years, the supermodel hosts of yesterday have been replaced by celebrity trainers like Tracy Anderson (her Goop-approved muscle-exhausting dance cardio is a killer) or Mary Helen Bowers (whose cultish Ballet Beautiful lengthening exercises draw an A-list crowd), who offer smart downloadable content on their sleek websites.

Here, a look at our favorite workout videos from then and now, to remind us that convenience never goes out of style.

The Risk-Taking Bravery of Keri Russell’s Bare Winter Legs

Keri Russell

There are many ways to defy the bracing cold of this week’s post-Juno weather: swiping on a mood-boosting pop of neon lipstick, brushing on a back-from-Ibiza glow—or reveling in the laissez-faire elegance of static-y winter hair. Yesterday, for Keri Russell winter rebellion came at the hands of a printed skirt and poppy stilettos—a springlike combination which called for bare, well-moisturized limbs on a snowy Brooklyn sidewalk. Proof that with enough steely determination, you can forgo thickly knitted tights every once in a while.

Isabel Lucas’s Pastel Lip and Easy Hair: How to Master the Black Tie Beauty Equation

Taking a Couture Beauty Trend to the Street: Joan Smalls’s Knockout Red Lip

Joan Smalls

It’s a well-established fact that models act as a bellwether for beauty trends in the making—offering a quick real-world read on which directional makeup trends will translate from the runway to the street. Case in point: At yesterday’s Chanel couture show, model Joan Smalls walked the fashion house’s Grand Palais show space wearing a piece of black tulle netting over her eyes and a bold shade of poppy red on her lips. Following the grand finale, she promptly traded her bolero jacket for a leather one, swapped her fabric headpiece for a backward knit beanie—but left her brightly painted mouth neatly in place. It’s a smartly reimagined makeup equation that promises to carry us through these last months of winter with just the right amount of pulled-together edge.

6 Parisiennes Share the Couture Week Lipsticks They Can’t Live Without

Photo: Courtesy of Catherine Baba

Ask any New York street style star about her favorite go-to lipstick and she’ll likely name MAC’s Ruby Woo: The super bright crimson hue treads the line between preppy and provocative in a way that’s quintessentially American. With Paris couture week underway, the iconic lip color is sure to make a few overseas front row appearances—but what about its international equivalent? Is there one best-selling tube of beige, rouge, or rose that every Parisienne swears by?

To find out, we asked a few stylish citizens what shade they regularly pack in their clutches—and while their choices are as unique as the women who love them, one thing is clear: These Gallic beauties feel incomplete without a swipe of their signature pigment. “You can wear only lipstick and you feel dressed,” says actress Cécile Cassel, who will rely on “a very red” shade of YSL Rouge Pur Couture for a pop of color while running from Chanel to Alexandre Vauthier this week. Inès de la Fressange, who swears by a flattering shade of nude, puts it more bluntly. “French women are lazy!” she says. “With lipstick, it’s a small effort for a big result.”

Here, six Paris fashion fixtures reveal their go-to shades.

Alma Jodorowsky’s Gamine Beauty: Her Wispy Ponytail and Cat-Eyed Liner at Chanel Couture

Alma Jodorowsky

Parisienne Alma Jodorowsky may be a woman of many talents—singing, acting, and modeling, to name just a few—but at the Chanel Couture show today, she was every inch the Karl Lagerfeld muse. Putting a fresh spin on classic schoolgirl chic, Jodorowsky’s sixties ponytail had just a hint of volume at the crown—and plenty of French-girl nonchalance thanks to a few errant wisps. The look had a modern ease paired with clean skin, bushy brows, and a neat feline flick along the lashlines. Further evidence that nouvelle vague beauty is having a moment? All signs point to yes.

The 10 Best Beauty Looks: Week of January 26, 2015

Lupita Nyong'o

This week’s best beauty looks met at the intersection of luxury and simplicity. Lupita Nyong’o showed that radiant skin (and the perfect pair of shades) is an asset that can’t be overvalued, while Kendall Jenners tawny golden cheeks may have taken a cue from the color of her oversize fur collar. Kerry Washington and Drew Barrymore embraced the unfailing after-dark appeal of a bold red lip. Also making the case for a classic: Natalie Portman —whose smooth brunette blowout and rouge noir manicure offered plenty of inspiration to dip into a rich new nail palette.

The Stealth Impact of Rosy Nude Makeup: Elizabeth Olsen’s Front Row Look at Dior Haute Couture

Elizabeth Olsen

From saturated swipes of poppy to fearless pops of neon pink, bright statement lips have become the beauty look of the moment—until now. Enter Elizabeth Olsen, whose warm flesh-toned palette at today’s Dior Haute Couture show in Paris offered a refreshingly subtle alternative for turning up the volume on your makeup. Pairing rich rosy brown lids with matching high-shine lips and tawny cheeks, the actress’s monochromatic look revealed the secret behind the surprising impact of an all-over neutral face: an amped-up supercharged gaze.

Karlie Kloss, Kate Hudson, and Elsa Hosk Discover the Flyaway Chic of a Little Seasonal Static

Kate Hudson

We hold a special place in our hearts for those beauty moments where laid-back meets appropriately stylish—which is why few looks fill us with joy quite like the sweater-weather elegance of a little seasonal static. Spotted in Paris yesterday, Kate Hudsons loosely coiled topknot and face-framing baby hairs were made for a day spent wrapped in a warm, furry collar. Also in town to walk the Atelier Versace show, Karlie Kloss gave a sleek part and messy bun a little local French-girl ease with a few extra flyaways. Not to be outdone, Victoria’s Secret Angel Elsa Hosk hit the streets in New York with her arctic blond waves raked back into a gloriously fuzzy style made even better by her windswept cheeks. Here, three reasons to give your smoothing serum—and your hairbrush—the day off.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Selena Gomez, Emily DiDonato, and More

Selena Gomez best beauty Instagram

It takes confidence to look directly into the camera, and this week on Instagram was one of powerful eye contact. Perhaps it was a bounty of exceptionally good hair: Caroline Trentini gazed through reflective sunglasses while showing off an effortlessly undone side braid, while Selena Gomez peered through similarly colorful shades framed with feathery bangs and cool choppy layers. The heart wants what it wants, and it wants a razored haircut. Model Emily DiDonato showed off waves tousled by Peter Butler, and Constance Jablonskis blue eyes met the camera lens as she paused for a mid-run selfie. And speaking of blue, Willow Smith (one of the most admirably self-assured young women on the planet) wore cerulean lips with pastel lids—her cool stare communicating that she knew she had a winning combination. 7 Beauty Looks Made for Menswear-Inspired Dressing: From Ciara to Kristen Stewart

Ciara menswear-inspired

From seventies-inspired white pant suits to the return of the tuxedo jacket, menswear-inspired dressing can telegraph Bianca Jagger or Bowie—depending on your hair and makeup. Spotted at Berlin Fashion Week, Dree Hemingway upped the tough-edged glamour of a black suit with pin-straight hair and pared-down makeup, while Angelina Jolie went the classic route with an easy jacket, crisp red lip, and Hollywood waves in Beverly Hills. Georgia May Jagger gave a men’s-style tweed jacket a distinctly feminine edge with a Bardot -esque feline flick and a high-volume bombshell mane in London—a tactic Ciara employed with the help of waist-length curls and a flash of her toned abs. And over in Paris, Lou Doillon brought home our favorite beauty lesson of the season: The disarming chic of fuzzy bedhead makes everything look better, including an oversize blazer. From Kristen Stewart to Keri Russell, here are seven ways why boyish dressing—and the right beauty look—are a perfect match.

Taking Beauty Cues from the 2015 Pre-Fall Collections: 5 Hair Looks to Try Now

Alexander Wang pre-fall 2015

The most exciting beauty looks yet from the 2015 pre-fall collections were all about subverting hair expectations. At Lanvin, a heavy curtain of bangs fell over models’ foreheads, challenging the notion that it’s best to ease into full fringe in gradual increments. Two hair states typically associated with needing a quick fix—languid, no-volume strands and extreme roots—were reimagined as winning beauty statements: Alexander Wang models wore their hair slicked flat against the crown, conjuring an everyday ease that made us reconsider our next blowout; at Giambattista Valli, a panel of bright orange pigment was painted on along the part, gradually giving way to each girl’s natural color at the ends. Meanwhile, Kenzo showed rave-era bantu knots landscaping the top of models’ heads, and Valentino presented cornrows that reminded us of FKA twigss “Pendulum” video, in which the musician is suspended by her hallmark braids alone. We think she’d look beautiful in one of those dresses, too.

Anne Hathaway’s Day-to-Night Bob: Two Takes on Chin-Length Hair

Anne Hathaway

After impressively dodging the awkward stage that anyone who’s ever grown out a boyish crop knows all too well, Anne Hathaway is working the possibilities of a chin-length bob. Photographed in New York yesterday, the Song One actress paired head-to-toe denim with casually mussed up waves, rosebud lips, and a healthy, in-from-the-cold flush. Later in the evening, Hathaway turned up the elegance for an appearance on the Late Show with the help of smoky lids and some well-defined curls. And while we’re all for embracing the laissez-faire beauty of incidental winter frizz, isn’t it nice to know that a few twists of a curling iron and a blast of shine spray are all it takes for a look this polished?

Anne Hathaway tells us the story behind her Valentino dress from the archives for the 2013 Met Gala:

Olivia Munn’s Violet Lashes and Powder Pink Lips: A Subtler Way to Wear Color

Olivia Munn

Marrying the wearability of nude makeup with the defiant joy of a jolt of neon, winter pastels offer a fresh way to give sun-deprived complexions a mood-boosting kick. Spotted in New York last night, Olivia Munn celebrated the Mortdecai premiere with a pretty pairing of understated violet lashes, rosy cheeks, and powder pink lips that felt particularly vibrant with her radiant skin and high-shine hair. With bold fuschia and high-voltage poppy lips fast becoming fashion’s favorite antidote to seasonal gloom, could colorful mascara be next? One thing’s for sure: Now is the time to go bright.

Reasons to Love Breaking a Sweat: Dakota Johnson Upgrades Post-Workout Hair

Dakota Johnson

If Taylor Swift is the queen of perplexingly glamorous gym exits, let Dakota Johnsons lineup of laid-back styles serve as a reminder to wear your post-workout hair with pride. Spotted in West Hollywood yesterday, the Fifty Shades of Grey star left a Pilates class wearing a loose topknot that allowed a few wayward strands to peek out—a style that had the same athletic charm as her loosely woven schoolgirl plaits earlier this month. Offering further evidence that breaking a sweat can propel hair to rumpled perfection, the actress (and Vogue February cover girl) took her smooth blowout to the next level with a lived-in feel. 6 Inspiring Beauty Looks for a Last-Minute Weekend Escape: From Keira Knightley to Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong'o

After a few weeks’ worth of post-holiday madness and steadily dipping temperatures, who hasn’t found themselves daydreaming of warmer waters—or at least three glorious days at home spent hibernating on the couch? And judging by some of our favorite recent travel looks, simple weekend beauty hardly has to come at the expense of personal style. Spotted at LAX, Lupita Nyong’os incandescent skin showed that even dry air can be outwitted with a supercharged moisturizer, while Keira Knightley touched down with lived-in waves that were a match made in frequent flier—or Sunday brunch—heaven. Ciaras loose, low airport ponytail was designed for a long-haul flight spent burrowing into a good book, and Emma Roberts wasted no time fighting winter static with a fuzzy braid. From Sienna Miller to Chloë Grace Moretz, here are six laid-back beauty inspirations—just in time for the long weekend.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Kate Hudson, Gisele Bündchen, and More

“Be kind to yourself” is a sound piece of life advice—and this week on Instagram, personal wellness was the message. Lady Gaga posted a selfie with a bare face and bright eyes, well-rested and still in bed, and Brooklyn jeweler Catbird shared a relaxed morning moment that paired denim-colored nails with blue jeans and a favorite assortment of rings. Slowing down was also on Kate Hudsons agenda: She posted a photo of herself in the midst of a ten-minute meditation. And of course, being kind to yourself means being kind to your body. Gisele Bündchen snapped a freshly cracked coconut, ready for the drinking, and Jacquelyn Jablonski made a homemade smoothie bowl. Kim Gordon creatively captured her flung-off fake eyelashes (we all know that feeling at the end of a long night), and Mary Charteris indulged in a bath brightened with rainbow bubbles. Think Pink: Kristen Stewart, Marion Cotillard, and More Embrace the Year’s New Lip Color

Kristen Stewart

Cooler than a classic scarlet and infinitely bolder than nude, a fearless pop of fuchsia is turning into the season’s best new statement lip color. Spotted at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles, Oscar nominee Marion Cotillard made a matte magenta shade feel as crisp as a Parisian red by pairing it with clean skin and slicked-back hair, while fellow contender Jessica Chastain reminded us that redheads are always pretty in pink. And the shade isn’t just for the red carpet: Kristen Stewart offered a laid-back take on a glossy neon mouth with a menswear-inspired suit and sneakers while out and about in New York. Just in time for Saturday night, here are three good reasons why we’re stocking up on power pinks this month.

Felicity Jones and the High-Shine Appeal of a Rosy Lip Stain

Happy Birthday Kate Moss! Her 5 Best Forever Young Party Looks

Kate Moss

Want to ensure you never have a bad birthday? Arm yourself with playful hair and makeup. Year after year, this is the advice we’ve garnered from Kate Moss, who turns 41 today. Whether staying up all night at London’s Claridge’s hotel or blowing out sparkling candles in Paris with Donatella Versace, Moss has shown that when it comes to dressing for your own party, you should go all out—whether that means embracing the punk appeal of a fresh-from-the-runway cornrowed ponytail, the more-is-more impact of disco curls and a statement eye (be it smoky or starry), or the pared-down glamour of a good blowout and wine-stained lips. Then drape yourself in sequins, silk, and light-catching metallics and, when your guests ask how many years old you are, you can correct them by saying, “years young.”

Alexa Chung and the Split-Second Polish of Face-Framing Curls

The Winning Beauty Looks of the 2015 Best Actress Oscar Nominees, from Marion Cotillard to Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon

The Oscar nominations were announced today to a flurry of Internet chatter (Jennifer Aniston was robbed! What about Selma?). One thing that can be universally agreed upon, however, is that the Best Actress nominees have already won us over on the red carpet this year with powerful signature beauty looks as distinguished as their performances.

Take Bond Girl turned Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike, who masterfully walks the line between ladylike and edgy with a penchant for pretty nude makeup, a sleekly styled bob—and the occasional flash of her fearless undercut—while The Theory of Everything contender Felicity Jones went from fresh-faced ingénue to a sophisticated force to be reckoned with both on and off the silver screen.

But it’s not just Academy Award first-timers who’ve been stealing the spotlight. In contrast to her practically barefaced performance in Wild, Reese Witherspoon regularly pays tribute to Old Hollywood glamour—glossy, side-swept curls, neatly painted crimson lips, and the occasional smoky eye. With her impossibly radiant skin and fine-boned features—to say nothing of her covetable red mane—Still Alice front-runner Julianne Moore hasn’t lost an ounce of appeal since her first Oscar nod for Boogie Nights almost 20 years ago. And with her thoughtfully polished take on Parisian elegance, this year’s surprise nominee, Marion Cotillard, (Two Days, One Night) reminds us that even the most classic sensibility can have spectacular range.

Here, a look at the 2015 Best Actress contenders’ best beauty looks.

How to Counteract Red Winter Skin: 9 Skin Care Products to Soothe, Correct, and Protect

Photographed by David Sims, Vogue, July 2007

The rush of skiing down mountainsides and skating across ice ponds results in the kind of flushed cheeks we welcome whole-heartedly. The dry, reddened, irritated skin that comes with braving city wind tunnels, on the other hand, is another story—symptoms of a frigid winter to be avoided at all costs. “Redness [occurs] because our bodies are trying to heat themselves, bringing blood close to the surface of the skin and dilating capillaries,” explains New York City dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner, M.D. And while youthful skin can bounce back from an aggravated flare up a few minutes after stepping in from the cold, she continues, capillaries don’t close as quickly with age.

Fortunately, there are a few easy steps to preventing and curing the seasonal syndrome. Preventative measures can be taken in the form of covering sensitive skin with a cotton scarf when heading outdoors. “Wool and cashmere can irritate the area around your mouth,” says Gerstner. Daily applications of blood vessel–narrowing topicals such as prescription Mirvaso will also help avoid visible reactions—but, according to Gerstner, they’re temporary. “The redness will be back in twelve hours.”

Weather aside, additional irritants may be hiding in your makeup bag or diet. When redness becomes a problem, Gerstner advises avoiding alcohol “in your face wash, toners, and makeup”—as well as one too many glasses of wine—because it naturally contributes to dilating your vessels. “Certain foods also cause redness, especially spicy meals, cheese, and contact with common allergy triggers like mango rinds.”

When faced with a sudden flare-up, the simplest solution is to regulate your temperature as quickly as possible. “Try to warm up your cheeks [if you’re very cold], or, if you’re hot from a sauna, switch to ice water.” Skin care products featuring ingredients like soothing colloidal oatmeal, chamomile, or rose extract can also calm irritation. “I apply By Terry’s Baume de Rose to my chin when it’s chapped—it’s essentially a more elegant Aquaphor,” says Gerstner, who also favors washing her face with hydrating oils in the colder months in place of stripping detergents.

Here, nine products to save your winter-chapped face.

How to Take Nude Makeup to the Next Level: Jourdan Dunn’s All-Over Monochromatic Glow

Jourdan Dunn

It may be turning into the makeup trend of the decade, but is there anyone who does high-impact nudes quite like Jourdan Dunn? Spotted at the Burberry Prorsum menswear show in London today, the model dipped into a warmer palette that harmonized with the house’s bright terra-cotta suede trench and included a pretty pairing of shaded copper lids, peach cheeks, and tawny lips. Well-defined eyebrows, a subtle rimming of charcoal liner, and a swipe of black mascara gave additional emphasis to the face—and provided a fresh new beauty blueprint for taking neutrals to the next level.

Why Gisele Bündchen’s Winter Waves Were Made for a Day Outdoors

Gisele Bundchen

Whether she’s bounding down the beach or treading the Chanel catwalk, Gisele Bündchens honey-streaked mane is nothing if not a case study in the art of consistent bombshell tousle. And while a dip in the sea or a backstage blast of texturizing spray (to say nothing of a few thick sun-kissed highlights) don’t hurt, the model mom’s trip to the ice-skating rink in Boston yesterday offered proof that polar vortexes and perfectly rumpled waves aren’t mutually exclusive. Neither is using a light hand with your makeup: Bündchen’s trademark fresh-faced good looks and flushed cheeks reminded us that even a skillful application of in-from-the-cold blush can’t beat the real thing. Our thoughts: Why not skip the lengthy blowout and tease out some texture with a diffuser—then rely on a gusty day to do the rest.

Emma Stone Golden Globes

At tonight’s Golden Globes—the first in a string of indelibly glamorous award ceremonies—all eyes will be on film’s Best Actress and Supporting Actress nominees. From inside Hollywood homes and penthouse suites, the industry’s top makeup artists will work tirelessly to create a beauty look that’s on par with a client’s captivating performance.

Once each actress steps out of her car and onto the red carpet, however, she’s left to her own devices to maintain her bold lips, sharply shaded eyes, and flash-proof skin throughout the ceremony. For this, she relies on a carefully edited arsenal of products stashed in her glittering clutch. Here, an inside look at the clutches of nominees Emma Stone and Felicity Jones.

Leave it to Lupita Nyong’o to defy our expectations for red-carpet hair and makeup once again: She may not have been nominated for an award at the 2015 Golden Globes, but the actress laid claim to her title as our favorite rule-breaker for the second year in a row by matching her Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress with a more-is-more swirl of lilac eyeshadow, a swipe of cool pink lipstick, and a knockout crop of grown-out curls. In what may have been the other surprise beauty statement of the night, Lorde varied from her signature goth plum lip by reaching for a brighter, bolder shade of crimson to wear with her sleek, straight ponytail. Meanwhile, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore also embraced a hint of high-glam spirit: Rather than tone down their makeup, they went for sharply shaded smoky eye makeup and stained lips that upped the impact of their flashing metallic dresses, while a newly pregnant Keira Knightley was radiant with a wash of blush and rich berry lips. She wasn’t the only English rose who stood out from the pack: Fellow Brits Rosamund Pike, Sienna Miller, and Emily Blunt were amongst the evening’s most striking invitees—reimagining the traditional red-carpet beauty formula with easy hair, supernatural skin, and a healthy glow that felt like a breathe of fresh air. Pink Is the New Red: 13 Good Reasons Why the Color Feels Fresh Again

Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, Vogue, December 2014

Every color has a personality, an emotion that you channel while wearing it. Red is exciting—a color to evoke your inner daring. Then, there’s pink: safe, benign, and obviously pretty. Or is it? A look at this season’s fresh takes on magenta, rose, and flamingo may be enough to make you reconsider the shade’s potential. The saturated pastel hue of Chanel No 5 Hair Mist is the color of light creeping through the window and onto your pillow at sunrise. Dior’s Cheek & Lip Glow is like a middle-of-the-night surprise—turning on your car headlights to find that you’ve parked in front of a wall of jungle flowers. And YSL’s new palette seems to channel the undeniable cool of Hedi Slimanes glittery Mary Janes on the recent Saint Laurent runways. For further proof that pink is the new red, click through our slideshow below.

Why Face Masks Were Made for Saturdays: Lily Aldridge, Doutzen Kroes, and More

Lily Aldridge

What is it about models and face-mask selfies? For starters, when supernaturally (and consistently) good skin in the face of long-haul flights and pre-dawn call times is part of the job requirement, nothing beats the instant pick-me-up of a dose of purifying clay or a supercharged moisture balm. (Another reason: They’re fun.) Spotted on Instagram, Lily Aldridge kicked back after a long photo shoot with a bubble bath and a pore-cleansing Proactiv mask, while fellow Angel Doutzen Kroes slathered on a skin-saver as part of her pre-show prep last month. Model-to-watch Bella Hadid made the most of her downtime in her Seoul hotel room with a quick celadon-tinted fix and Tilda Lindstam showed off the simple joy of letting a DIY mud mask dry—and cracking it with a smile. Just in time for an appointment-free weekend, here’s to a long, lazy soak and a ten-minute face treat.

Watch Valentina Zelyaeva Shop the Farmer’s Market—and Make Her Favorite Healthy Sunchoke Soup

Valentina Zelyaeva healthy sunchoke soup recipe

Stepping into model Valentina Zelyaeva’s downtown apartment can feel like a New Year’s resolution wake-up call. The Russian beauty and longtime face of Ralph Lauren takes a 360-degree health-conscious approach to all aspects of her life. Zelyaeva’s guest room is currently being modified into a “zen zone” where she can meditate, while her Ocelot-sized cat has a more balanced diet than most—we’re talking organic chicken, fish oil, and cucumbers. Her lifestyle site, ValZelyaeva.com is also a vitamin-fueled, inspirational mecca for anyone who wants to learn about the benefits of clean eating and regular exercise.

Each month, Zelyaeva shares a lineup of colorful recipes, from a breakfast made of shredded apples with cinnamon, fresh blackberries, and oranges, and beauty tips that include natural toothpaste concoctions and juices for the skin. But according to Zelyaeva, the trajectory from fledgling model to wellness-guru-in-the-making didn’t happen overnight. As a young girl growing up in Moscow, she recalls traveling to her grandparents’ village, where everything was fresh from the ground to the table, but that quickly changed when she started modeling. Constant travel soon contributed to a seesaw diet that swung between a surplus of junk food or a salads-only approach. “I had no idea about nutrition. I thought by eating salads you’ll stay skinny,” she says. “Later, I discovered that it is more than that. You need good fats, you need proteins, and my roots reminded me of that.”

Now, Zelyaeva is studying to be health coach and will graduate from New York City’s Institute for Integrative Nutrition this March. And it doesn’t stop there: She wants to branch her knowledge of all-things healthy into a potential book and, eventually, offer a series of industry retreats that would equip young models with the knowledge to support a more well-rounded approach to nutrition, cooking, and exercise.

But why wait? In today’s Vogue.com video, we asked Zelyaeva to take us shopping at the Union Square farmer’s market—then show us how to make her favorite quick and easy sunchoke soup. Here’s to healthy beginnings for the year ahead.

Olivia Munn and the Art of Bright Lipstick: Why Dewy Skin is Everything

Olivia Munn

While we hold a special place in our heart for a brazen jolt of statement neon, it’s not always easy to make a pop of blazing lip color feel everyday wearable. Spotted at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles, Olivia Munn took bright hibiscus lipstick for a fresh-faced spin with the help of dewy, generously moisturized skin and foundation sheer enough to let a sunny smattering of freckles peek through. A soft wash of peach blush and a playful textured ponytail added to the look’s cheerful, why-wait-until-spring allure, prompting us to wonder if the best way to face the dreary weather is to forget about earth tones until summer.

Golden Globes Beauty by the Numbers: How to Predict This Year’s Winners by Their Red-Carpet Hair and Makeup Looks

Golden Globes Beauty

This weekend’s Golden Globes will set the tone for the rest of the awards shows to follow, especially when it comes to the Best Actress film nominees. For these nine women, Sunday will reveal who is poised to become the season’s darling—that golden girl who will take home the coveted statues and top the Best Dressed lists. For such an honor, much of the work has already been done: Dresses have been chosen, speeches have been written, and the performances for which they will be judged have been filmed, edited, and released in theaters. But, according to the great lineage of Golden Globes Best Actress winners, there may be one last stealth way for the 2015 nominees to gain a last-minute competitive edge—by choosing the right acceptance hair and makeup. In the service of discovering a fail-safe formula, we looked back at the past 36 years’ worth of winners and ran the numbers. The results are in. Few things, it seems, win over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association like the demure pairing of an evening updo and natural makeup—just ask Meryl Streep. To take the guesswork out of deciding between lipstick colors, whether or not to wear glasses, and of course, how to wear one’s hair, here is a statistical look back at the Best Actress Winners’ most successful beauty looks.

Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner’s BFF Beauty Is Proof that Opposites Attract

Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne may be rumored to be moving into Kendall Jenners Los Angeles pad, but her courtside look yesterday suggests she’s still a London girl at heart. Spotted at a Lakers game with trademark smoky eyes and a deep side part, the model’s freshly clipped undercut had the same Brit punk feel as her ripped jeans and Sgt. Pepper–esque Saint Laurent blazer. Meanwhile, Jenner looked every inch the Kardashian with a neat center part, nude lips, and a cream sweater dress. A sign that 2014’s BFF twinning trend is on the outs?

Breaking Out of a Makeup Rut in 2015: Editorial Whiz Dick Page Shares His Best Tricks

Makeup Ruts

Maybe it all started with a stroke of good luck—a single experimental gesture that resulted in a signature bright red lipstick or a darkened brushed-up brow. Before long, it became a daily ritual and then suddenly, before you knew what was happening, you were on beauty autopilot. “[Makeup habits] tend to run pretty deep,” says the editorial pro Dick Page. “You might do the same thing because it’s tried and true, but that can be boring.” So what better time to switch it up than the start of a new year? According to Page, women could stand to be more adventurous with their look. After all, it’s a task that sets the tone for the rest of the day. The good news is, breaking out of a makeup rut doesn’t have to require a total overhaul. “Changing one element in your wardrobe brings new meaning to the rest of your clothes and it’s the same with makeup,” says Page. “If more women thought about lipstick or blush the way they think about, say, accessories, everyone would be having more fun.” Point taken. Here, his five tips for learning to take a fresh risk, whether your goal is a dramatic change or a subtle shift.

1. Be Reductive
“Women tend to end up with makeup crutches—things they do as a matter of course without actually thinking about why they do them,” says Page. “Break up your routine up by leaving something off; for example, don’t wear mascara or use a lip pencil or eyeliner one day. Rather than actively changing something, delete it to change the way you look.”

2. Try a New Texture
“If you’re too chicken for tip number one, do your regular makeup but change the formula, change the materials. So if you’re a powder blush kind of girl, use a cream formula. It changes the texture, the finish, and the feel of the skin. It also affects the way light hits the face.”

3. Mix Up Your Routine
“Do your makeup in a different order. People tend to prep the skin, then go to foundation, concealer, eyeliner, and so forth. Change it up: Start with the cheek or the lip instead. See how it affects your face differently.”

4. Tweak Your Color Palette
“It’s easy to add color to your makeup without totally changing it. Swap out a brown liner for indigo or violet. It’s not a huge change, but it gives you a little bit of a lift.”

5. Let Your Skin Shine
“I think highlights are underused. A little bit of gold added to your regular makeup helps it pop. A metallic cream shadow—even from a theatrical supply store—can also be used on the top of your lip, bridge of your nose, inner corner of your eye, and brow bone [to flatter the skin]. You don’t have to go disco ball about it, it can just add more light.”

The New Resolution: Making Time for Yourself

Taking Time for Yourself

I can’t speak for other places in the world, but among New Yorkers, the oft-uttered phrase, “I’m so busy,” is delivered as a simultaneous lament and brag—one to be interpreted as both “I wish I could cut back” and “I’m in high demand.” As eye-rolling as that may be, the truth is, for better or worse, we are busy. I had never realized just how busy until a few months ago when I signed myself up for a ten-day mind-and-body cleanse that required me to stick to a few basic precepts: making all of my own meals, working out a few times during the prescribed period, taking one bath, and carving out ten minutes every morning and night to meditate. Simple enough, but my initial reaction to each task was, “Who has the time?” Then, upon further consideration, actually feeling frightened by how little space in my schedule I allot for basic human needs: Feeding and bathing myself, getting enough sleep, and improving my health and my heart rate. This is an even scarier realization when you take into account that I am a single woman with one job and no children—not even a house plant relies on me for life. How could I possibly be so busy?

And it’s not just me. Earlier this week on Instagram, Sean Diddy Combs responded to a commenter who told him he looked tired by saying, “That’s what work look like.” Sure. But does it have to? Perhaps due to Instagram’s FOMO-inducing feed, smart phones making us available to our colleagues, clients, friends, and romantic interests around the clock, and the Internet’s ever-looming #ICYMI culture, an unspoken competition has arisen: Whoever does the most stuff wins. But in racing from event to exhibition, meeting to project, dinner party to date, I’m beginning to feel like I’m missing the point entirely. This year, my resolution is to slow down, learn when to say no, and make time for myself.

“You need to undo the doing,” says Bob Roth, the executive director of the David Lynch Foundation, who, for more than 40 years, has found that 20 minutes of Transcendental Meditation—a simple act of sitting quietly with eyes closed and reflecting on a mantra—each morning is all it takes to reset the body and mind. “It’s more restful than sleep,” he says, because aside from TM’s immediate centering and thought-quieting effects, research suggests that the practice, when repeated over time, reverses the harmful effects of chronic stress—the kind of stress that stockpiles when you’re running at top speed through a self-imposed calendar of appointments. “When you feel anxious, your body produces cortisol which is disruptive to health,” explains Roth. REM sleep is crucial for reducing cortisol levels, but studies have suggested a mere 20 minutes of TM may make up for hours lost.

“You learn early on that if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else,” says Donna Karan, the entrepreneurial powerhouse who balances her family life and yoga practice while helming a fashion empire. Time has proven that it’s not sitting at a computer that ignites her best ideas: “I’ve designed whole collections while walking on the beach. When I’m relaxed and happy, I’m creatively much more open to new ideas.”

So how exactly does one make time to be relaxed and happy? “I have to schedule it in or it will never happen,” admits Karan of her daily hour of morning yoga. “It’s all but written in stone.” Of course, the irony is that when faced with an already packed calendar, Roth says, “There’s never any time.” Instead, you have to consider the payoff and make decisive cuts. “I would never think of missing meditation for 20 minutes of sleep. TM is profoundly restful—the next eight to ten hours of my day, my energy levels will be clear, focused, and coherent,” says Roth. “If I don’t have the energy to put ideas into place, what do I have?”

And with that, I’ve added to my 2015 calendar twice weekly can’t-be-missed morning workouts, and a once weekly evening block titled “Me” to be filled with whatever I want—be it reading, writing, trussing a rosemary chicken, taking a bath, practicing French (juste un peu), or going to sleep early. Entire hours dedicated to making myself happy, reorganizing my thoughts, and realigning goals. When friends, coworkers, or other interested parties call, I’m learning how to reply: “Sorry, I’m busy.”

How to Wake Up Pale Winter Skin without Bronzer: Emily Blunt’s Porcelain Glow

Emily Blunt

There are a number of ways to breathe new life into sun-deprived winter skin: a swirl of pink blush, a pop of bright lipstick, or a judicious dusting of bronzer. But judging by Emily Blunts lit-from-within skin, a supercharged dose of moisturizer is all you need to achieve the kind of fresh-faced glow that comes so easily in the summer. Spotted in Los Angeles yesterday with a subtle pairing of bronze lids, peach cheeks, and pale pink lips, the Into the Woods actress’s porcelain skin looked unseasonably fresh thanks to a dewy finish. Whether you rely on an enzyme scrub, a hydrating serum, or top your makeup with a drop of face oil for supernatural radiance during the cold season, one thing’s clear: Give powder the day off.

While 2015 is bound to bring on a wave of inspired beauty trends, one thing is certain: Short hair is here to stay. The abbreviated crops we’re coveting this year present femininity in a fresh new way that focuses on ease and modernity. It’s enough to convince even those with the most enviably long hair to consider lopping it all off. From a bold buzz cut (which, in the case of Lupita Nyong’o, keeps the focus firmly on her fine bone structure and luminous skin) to a breezy bob framed by straight-across-the-forehead fringe, these six new styles are equal parts polished and plucky.

New Year, New Red: Anne Hathaway and Rosamund Pike Embrace a Deeper Bordeaux Lip Color

Anne Hathaway wine-colored lip

While there’s something to be said for defying winter’s dreariest days with an upbeat jolt of neon lipstick, playing a deeper shade of red off sun-deprived skin might be the prettiest new way to lean into the season. Spotted at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Anne Hathaway attended a screening of Song One wearing the perfect post-holiday red: a warm wine-colored stain that felt dramatic enough for day or night. Also in town, Rosamund Pike paired a cooler version of the hue with a wash of bright pink, in-from-the-cold blush—showing that a pop of rich color, not bronzer, is the secret to waking up alabaster skin.

The Best Curls of All Time: From George Washington to Rihanna

Rihanna

Calling all curly-haired girls: If your New Year’s resolutions include abandoning an overwrought beauty routine in favor of going natural, you’re in good company. Throughout history, wavy manes have been synonymous with unbridled sexiness, voluminous kink, and the willingness to take up a bit of extra space.

For fifties comedienne Lucille Ball, ginger ringlets communicated a sense of carefree whimsy, while Marilyn Monroe’s platinum waves were as voluptuous as her famous silhouette. The aspirational afros rocked by sixties activist Angela Davis and seventies vocal powerhouse Chaka Khan were a study in liberated texture. And rockers Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix wouldn’t have had the same careless allure without their irreverent spirals.

In more recent years, Sarah Jessica Parker immortalized Carrie Bradshaw’s c-c-c-curly hair on Sex and the City. And musicians Rihanna and Lorde have sported springy, supersize looks. Here, the 37 iconic men and women who make complicated strands a no-brainer.

6 Alternative New Year’s Resolutions

New Years Resolutions

It’s only day two of 2015, meaning that most of us are still committed to our overly ambitious New Year’s resolutions. But why set yourself up for failure to begin with? Here, six more-attainable alternatives.

Instead of resolving to eat less take out . . . order in, but cook it yourself.

If you really hate grocery shopping, there’s still a way to have your dinner delivered without having to resort to Seamless. Try Blue Apron, a food delivery service that sends pre-portioned ingredients, along with a detailed recipe card, straight to your door, making it easier than ever to cook a healthy meal at home without having to change out of your pajamas.

Instead of resolving to spend less time watching TV . . . embrace the podcast revival.

If your Netflix addiction has taken over your Saturday nights, it’s time for you to download a few podcasts. Not only are they just as entertaining as anything on TV, they’re also the perfect thing to listen to while you’re on your way to your next dinner party.

Instead of resolving to take less Uber . . . take more Lyft rides.

We’ve all seen our bank accounts plunge at the hands of Uber. Avoid the guilt by downloading Lyft, the ride-sharing app that works just as well but is a lot friendlier to your wallet. You may even be able to say goodbye to Tinder, too—who knows who you might meet on the way home?

Instead of resolving to exercise more . . . track the steps you’re already taking.

Before you sign up for that gym membership you’ll eventually be trying to get out of, figure out how much exercise you’re already doing. Download any fitness-tracking app—the new iPhone even comes with the built-in Health—and start counting your steps. That SoulCycle class might not seem worth it when you learn how many calories you can burn just by walking to work.

Instead of resolving to do a juice cleanse . . . do a technology cleanse.

We all know that holiday feasts take their toll on our bodies, but what are our Instagram and Facebook habits doing to our minds? Instead of a week of the Master Cleanse, say goodbye to your smartphone. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, try going off the grid (temporarily, of course).

Instead of resolving to be more like Beyoncé . . . learn how to dance like her.

Beyoncé, aka the hardest working woman in show business, could make anyone feel unaccomplished. (Remember that mug making the rounds on Instagram?) But if you really want to follow in Bey’s footsteps, take a dance class with her backup dancers, Les Twins. Not only will you nail the choreography for “7/11,” you’ll get a head start on your exercise resolution.
