Ask any New York street style star about her favorite go-to lipstick and she’ll likely name MAC’s Ruby Woo: The super bright crimson hue treads the line between preppy and provocative in a way that’s quintessentially American. With Paris couture week underway, the iconic lip color is sure to make a few overseas front row appearances—but what about its international equivalent? Is there one best-selling tube of beige, rouge, or rose that every Parisienne swears by?

To find out, we asked a few stylish citizens what shade they regularly pack in their clutches—and while their choices are as unique as the women who love them, one thing is clear: These Gallic beauties feel incomplete without a swipe of their signature pigment. “You can wear only lipstick and you feel dressed,” says actress Cécile Cassel, who will rely on “a very red” shade of YSL Rouge Pur Couture for a pop of color while running from Chanel to Alexandre Vauthier this week. Inès de la Fressange, who swears by a flattering shade of nude, puts it more bluntly. “French women are lazy!” she says. “With lipstick, it’s a small effort for a big result.”

Here, six Paris fashion fixtures reveal their go-to shades.
