Taking a Couture Beauty Trend to the Street: Joan Smalls’s Knockout Red Lip

Joan Smalls

It’s a well-established fact that models act as a bellwether for beauty trends in the making—offering a quick real-world read on which directional makeup trends will translate from the runway to the street. Case in point: At yesterday’s Chanel couture show, model Joan Smalls walked the fashion house’s Grand Palais show space wearing a piece of black tulle netting over her eyes and a bold shade of poppy red on her lips. Following the grand finale, she promptly traded her bolero jacket for a leather one, swapped her fabric headpiece for a backward knit beanie—but left her brightly painted mouth neatly in place. It’s a smartly reimagined makeup equation that promises to carry us through these last months of winter with just the right amount of pulled-together edge.
