5 Humidity-Proof Products That Make a Hot Day Work in Your Favor

Makeup

Extreme humidity is a real hair and makeup killer—and there’s no point in fighting it. The toughest mattifying powders and waterproof liners melt off, while carefully conceived blowouts collapse on contact. Your best beauty bet? Just lean into the muggy air with products that not only embrace wetness, but happen, in fact, to look that much better in it.

There’s Givenchy‘s clear Mister Brow Groom gloss, an easy way to condition and keep unruly arches in place, no matter how hot it gets. Omorovicza’s neroli- and rose-scented mineral mist was practically designed for self-drenching, spritzed with a heavy hand to leave your skin shining, while Jergens clever monoi oil moisturizer works best when applied on damp limbs after showering to seal in hydration.

For glistening strands with a fresh-from-the-pool look, simply comb Hairstory’s vanishing Hair Balm through the roots, then strategically dot Milk Makeup’s mandarin and avocado oil tint across your cheeks and forehead for a dewy gleam that, quite thankfully, no amount of sweat can erase.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Kendall Jenner, Adele, and More

Adele

From left-leaning manicures and multigenerational outings to breast-feeding and bikinis, this week’s best beauty Instagrams centered on moments that were uniquely female. A welcome dose of girl power came courtesy of Liv Tyler, who shared a sweet and intimate portrait of motherhood, and Lena Dunham, who regrammed a DNC-themed manicure (hand-painted by Nails Y’all of Austin) with thumbs that digitally declared #imwithher.

Kendall Jenner celebrated the matriarchy at the races by striking a pose with her grandmother, each boasting raven-toned lengths, generational neck adornments, and playfully puckered pouts. Meanwhile, PR queen Fanny Bourdette-Donon stepped up her selfie game with a head full of netted Velcro rollers, offering a “before” that has us eager to see the “after.”

Water activities allowed the Insta set to beat the heat while showing off their respective brands of beauty prowess: Model Martha Hunt embraced her inner river rat and some SUP skills for a quick paddleboarding detour, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley threw it back to a sand-strewn seascape in Thailand, her toned abs, bronzed skin, and from-the-source refreshment reading like an advertisement for the season itself.

But it was Lupita Nyong’o’s blue and blissed-out Bali pool selfie that stole our hearts this week: The actress turned her face to the sun, her flawless complexion, close-cropped curls, and unwavering grin offering an image brimming with holiday nostalgia. Just give us bare feet, sizzling pavement, a backyard pool, and a Popsicle, and our summer smiles will be on par with Nyong’o’s before August’s end.

The Best Outdoor Model Workouts on Instagram

Ophelie Guillermand

Now that we’re heading into summer’s steamiest stretch, it seems unfathomable that we’ll be breaking out our sweaters and moving our workouts back into the gym in just a few months. But leave it the model set to remind us to savor every day that gets us off the treadmill and into the great outdoors.

If you’ve noticed that Cara Delevingne has been looking particularly toned lately, her generally fitness-free Instagram suggests it all comes down to tennis, while avid athletes Joan Smalls and Constance Jablonski found a less-structured workout in a friendly round of beach volleyball. Over in Miami Beach, Vanessa Axente shot some hoops by the boardwalk, and, somewhere just as sunny, Karlie Kloss perfected a bridge during an alfresco yoga session.

But it’s not just about breaking a sweat in the fresh air: Half the fun of under-the-sun exercise is spending a little time in nature. Grace Mahary cycled riverside in Manhattan, while the impossibly sculpted Izabel Goulart found her core-toning moment of Zen while paddle-boarding in Mauritius. Paige Reifler caught some waves in Costa Rica, while Lily Donaldson saddled up across the pond.

But if you’re typically of the mindset that a vacation isn’t a vacation when it requires an ounce of discipline, take a page from Josephine Skriver, who is trekking through Vietnam right now, and seize the opportunity to embrace a new perspective: After all, hiking is nothing more than a walk with a gorgeous view.

Here, 13 sun-soaked reasons why the gym can wait.

This Classic Accessory Is the Answer to Every Summer Beauty Crisis

Sun hats

Despite our best efforts (i.e., dry shampoo, face mist, blotting papers), the season’s scorching temperatures often leave us looking, well, less than entirely presentable. With another month of summer ahead of us, why not reach for an effortless fix in the form of a breezy sun hat? Shielding your skin from harsh rays while simultaneously deflecting eyes from your melted makeup and unruly hair, it’s the chic answer to all of your summer beauty crises.

If you’d like help figuring out how to wear one, you need only look to Instagram as your guide: A Maison Michel number recently called for a selfie or two (or three or four . . . ) as Alexa Chung walked the city streets, while a bikini-clad Romee Strijd plopped a wide-brimmed version atop her damp tresses. Spotted in the Greek islands, Alessandra Ambrosio sought out the shade, her brunette lengths just visible underneath a hat from her ále by Alessandra collection. Blondes, on the other hand, would do well to take a cue from Amanda Norgaard, who matched her golden waves to a woven straw topper.

Statement takes on the classic accessory call for subtle hair adjustments to match. In an open field, Hanneli Mustaparta framed her Chanel boater with a pair of twin plaits, while Phoebe Tonkin let her hair spill from a chapeau wrapped with a thick black ribbon as she plucked pink flowers from the vine. But it was Emily Ratajkowski who proved that when it comes to hats, the bigger the better. With face-framing wisps peeking out, her supersize version shielded not only her bronzed frame but also the pooch she held in her arms. Now that’s the dog days of summer done right.

10 Vogue Editors Share Their Favorite Sunscreens

Photographed by Mario Testino, Vogue, June 2013

Competing with the perfect body oil or coconut-scented surf spray for a spot in the cramped inner sanctum of your summer beauty arsenal, it’s a given that you’ll be devoting prime real estate to a serious broad-spectrum sunscreen—especially if you’re headed to Rio for the Olympic Games. And as any diligent year-round SPF slatherer knows, finding the right kind of UV protection—one that smells like a day at the beach, melts right into the skin, or can last through the occasional deckside cannonball—is a beautiful thing indeed. From stealthily SPF-spiked makeup to whisper-light fluids that double as a favorite moisturizer, here are the skin savers that Vogue editors would pack for Rio, a long weekend upstate, and all points in between.

11 Women Who Transformed Their Most Unusual Feature Into an Epic Beauty Signature

Angelina Jolie Pitt: Lips

Silent film actress Clara Bow would have celebrated her 111th birthday today. Known throughout the ’20s as the “It Girl”—a nickname that alluded not only to her role in the popular romantic comedy It, but also to that certain something that separates innately cool women from the pack—Bow had a particularly memorable face, with down-turned eyes framed by thinly painted, pantomime eyebrows.

For glittering silver screen starlets and real girls alike, it’s safe to say that an unusual and prominent feature is akin to winning the genetic lottery, ensuring faces stand out from the crowd and make a lingering first impression. Frida Kahlo’s power brows—or brow, as the case may be—communicated a stern and eccentric quality that lifted her self-portraits into the realm of the iconic. Elizabeth Taylor’s violet-hued eyes, eternally rimmed by edgings of kohl, afforded her an effortlessly unforgettable gaze, while Grace Jones’s strong, dynamic bone structure helped to define an ever-expanding genre of androgyny. And from the moment she burst onto the scene, Angelina Jolie Pitt’s naturally voluptuous lips became the stuff of legend, that much more so for having arrived at a time when artificially plumped pouts were the era’s most sought-after beauty upgrade.

Small in size but not proverbial stature, Cindy Crawford’s well-placed mole cemented her status as the ultimate ’90s-era super babe, inspiring many to paint on their own faux rendition. These days, fresh-faced model newbies have their own idiosyncratic signatures that set them apart from the pack: Adwoa Aboah’s smattering of freckles are as charming as they are idiosyncratic, and Gigi Hadid’s baby-faced cheeks read as youthful, all-American, and refreshingly healthy.

Here, 11 women whose unconventional good looks have defined their careers—and shaped the face of beauty.

This Family Duo Proves That Mommy-and-Me Beauty Isn’t Just for the Girls

Kelly Rowland

The fashion set may be teeming with mother-daughter duos that could pass for sisters, but it takes special finesse to calibrate your hairstyle to your son’s without sending him on a quest to destroy all photographic evidence years from now.

Delivering one of summer’s cutest twinning moments, Kelly Rowland and her 1-year-old son, Titan Jewell Witherspoon, rocked matching cornrows in West Hollywood yesterday.

It’s not the first time they’ve synced up their looks: Earlier in the month, the two were spotted wearing his-and-hers hats, with Titan slipping a baseball cap over his curls while his mom topped her ponytail with a sleek fedora. And offering a less matchy-matchy way to riff on your date’s look that even grown men could get behind, Rowland hit the green carpet at Safe Kids Day with her long hair woven into a wraparound braid while her toddler sported a cloud of frothy curls.

Here, three reasons why mommy-and-me beauty isn’t just for girls.

New Mom, New Look! Liv Tyler’s Post-Pregnancy Hair Makeover on Instagram

21 Women Who Turned Cool Mom Hair Into a Legendary Trademark

Brigitte Bardot

Bad Moms hits theaters this week, and though there’s plenty of deliciously bad behavior, the hair is anything but. On- and offscreen, Mila Kunis is known for lustrous, light-catching lengths that fall well past her shoulders, making young motherhood seem a glamorous gig indeed.

Of course, the actress isn’t the first to prove that mom hair can be as inimitable as the women who style it (or not) each morning. Grace Kelly’s signature coif maintained its immaculate, glossy allure well after pregnancy, while Audrey Hepburn’s cradle-pushing styles ranged from gamine pigtails to elevated updos accented with cheeky head scarves. Jane Birkin’s pin-straight lengths and lash-skimming bangs were just right for striking playful mommy-and-me poses. And Cindy Crawford embraced the mother-daughter #Twinning trend years ago, shaking out a burnished brunette mane that was the pitch-perfect match to near identical clone Kaia’s floppy, boat-ready bun.

That same doppelgänger appeal has become a trademark for Lisa Bonet and daughter Zoë Kravitz—who have stepped out in coordinated, waist-grazing braids and dreads; likewise the double-take effect of Gwyneth Paltrow and daughter Apple, whose beachy blonde lengths share stellar DNA—and quite possibly the same hairstylist.

But leave it to Beyoncé to take mom hair to new heights entirely: On a recent jaunt to Paris, she wore her hair natural for an Eiffel Tower–centric snap, allowing her long and lightened strands to play the ideal counterpart to Blue Ivy’s close-cropped onyx curls. Here, 21 mom manes that prove that motherhood means good times—and even better hair.

4 Beauty Signatures Worth Stealing From Lollapalooza’s Best Onstage Acts

Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza kicks off today and is expected to draw a crowd of more than 400,000 fans as the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary. The talented performers in the lineup include some of our favorite style-minded female frontwomen—all of them seemingly destined to make waves with their onstage hair and makeup choices in addition to their sound.

If you’re headed to Chicago to join in the festivities or just searching for weekend beauty inspiration, look no further than Lana Del Rey, who is bound to sport her retro-cool cat-eye (easily re-created with a flick of waterproof liquid black liner), while Aluna Francis (of AlunaGeorge) channels her inner rebel by swiping on a coat of shockingly wearable midnight-color lipstick.

If hair is more your thing, embrace summer frizz worthy of the Haim sisters, who continue to prove that the power of a good salt spray should never be underestimated, especially in a heat wave.  And then there’s Lolawolf singer Zoë Kravitz: Her unapologetically bright teal lids are the perfect risk-taking solution for anyone stuck in a makeup rut this month.

The New Wrinkle You Didn’t See Coming—And How to Make It Disappear

decolletage

In the August issue of Vogue, we spotlight what’s been coined “the new wrinkle,” aka the accordion fan of fine lines that start to surface on your neck and chest with age, often most visible in the morning after a night (or lifetime) of side-sleeping has pressed them into place. Even the eternally youthful Cindy Crawford admits that décolletage maintenance is top of mind for her. “When you’re 20, pillow lines go away in fifteen minutes,” says Crawford. “But as I’ve gotten older, I notice those lines take a little longer.”

With fall’s most directional runways laying heavy emphasis on an exposed swath of décolleté—see Demna Gvasalia’s conceptual lineup of parkas, trench coats, and even bombers pushed off the shoulder at Balenciaga, for starters—new emphasis is being given to keeping the area as fresh as your face. According to experts, changing the position in which you slumber is the simplest, if perhaps the most difficult first course of action. “The best you can do is sleep on your back,” suggests New York dermatologist Misbah Khan, M.D. of the skin-care concern cropping up with increased frequency.

Other than attempting the near-impossible with head-positioning beauty pillows, back-steadying mattresses or melatonin-boosting sleep bracelets, your best short-term strategy may be booking one of a handful of in-office treatments that are shifting their sights below the chin. Mashell Tabe, the Albuquerque-based micro-needling pro whose clients include Gwyneth Paltrow and Alexi Ashe, has begun focusing her sessions on the neck and chest area to trigger a wound-healing response that stimulates the production of elastin. A dose of ultrasound energy via Ultherapy at your derm’s office could tighten the delicate décolletage area, according to Manhattan dermatologist Shereene Idriss, M.D., who suggests following it with a collagen-boosting session of the Fraxel Dual 1550 laser to fade fine lines.

At home, a supercharged nightly skin-care routine and, perhaps most importantly, daily SPF attention (Crawford always drives with a scarf handy to prevent sneaking sun exposure) are your best plan for prevention—and with a wave of chic new products targeting the neck and chest, you can rest easy knowing that your skin has a 24-hour game plan.

Dakota Johnson Joins the No-Makeup Selfie Movement on Instagram

dakota johnson

If the #WokeUpLikeThis movement on Instagram was the ultimate celebrity humblebrag, the recent string of no-makeup selfies—without the benefit of a warm Valencia filter glow—feel more like a sincere effort to pierce the artifice of a carefully curated profile.

The latest celebrity to go barefaced? Dakota Johnson, who posted a snap from a makeup chair that showcased the “sweet hue of exhaustion under your eyes” that crack-of-dawn call times and jet lag can bring with them. Nothing that a dab of good concealer can’t fix, but looking at Johnson’s fresh-faced glow and light sprinkling of freckles leaves us wondering if the Fifty Shades star picked up two game-changing French beauty tips during her recent shoot in Paris: Good skin beats the best makeup—and, bien sûr, under-eye circles are sexy.

FKA twigs Makes the Case for Hypnotic Khaleesi Hair

fka twigs

FKA twigs has always been a chameleonic beauty—see the long white dreads she tossed around the Panorama Festival stage last weekend—but did you know that she’s also a part-time khaleesi? Or, so it appeared, after those shimmering locks unfurled into a surreal, soft cloud of hair, as spotted this week on Instagram.

Though she described her silvered mane as that of a “hungry little studio troll,” we couldn’t help but think of the signature plaited, desert-dry texture of the Game of Thrones’s dragon rider, after a few months spent roaming across Essos. The hip-grazing strands are a hypnotic hair proposition that channels a fierce khaleesi spirit—and makes a surprisingly compelling case for one twigs Targaryen to take the Iron Throne next season.

The Best Face Masks and the Chic Women Who Swear By Them

Face mask

In the fast-evolving world of skin care, masks are having a golden moment. There is a steady stream of eyebrow-raising novelties out of Korea, involving rubberized textures and bubbling pearl extracts. Meanwhile, other products carry on the farm-to-table ethos, like Fresh’s new Vitamin Nectar mask, spotlighted in the August issue of Vogue. A blend of crushed oranges, lemons, and clementines, the formula has the sensory appeal of teatime marmalade but comes loaded with antioxidants, gentle alpha-hydroxy acids, and revitalizing minerals like copper and zinc.

But for those uninitiated in the art of masking, or for those looking to diversify their portfolio, it helps to have practical, real-world guidance. What’s the best summertime refresh? What to use after a long-haul flight? With that in mind, we’ve polled eight stylish and skin-savvy women for their tried-and-true rituals.

6 New Cool-Girl Haircuts That Prove It’s Time to Pick Up the Shears

celeb haircuts

Somewhere between record-breaking temperatures and sheer long hair ennui lies an explanation for the recent wave of game-changing haircuts among the street style set. And the phenomenon isn’t exclusive to the red carpet’s usual beauty chameleons—with summer’s most approachable makeovers coming down to a well-strategized date with the shears.

Take Victoria Beckham, who traded in her waist-skimming signature waves for a springy new bob that makes the best of the supercharged texture that a steamy day brings with it. Selena Gomez also gave her lanky curls a midsummer lift, while Dakota Johnson couldn’t lose her extensions fast enough once she wrapped her Fifty Shades shoot in Paris.

But really, there’s no greater harbinger of a shifting beauty landscape than models, for whom a luxurious—read: versatile—head of hair is part of the job description. Anja Rubik embraced a summer bob (courtesy of editorial hair whiz Christiaan), while Cara Delevingne took the shoulder-grazing plunge last week. Also on board for a practically self-styling chop? Kendall Jenner, whose new shoulder-grazing look has already been cemented as the season’s freshest length.

Above, six reasons why it’s time for more than just a trim.

6 New Under-Eye Concealers That Are Changing the Coverage Game

concealers

It’s Wednesday afternoon, and as the midweek madness hits full tilt at the office, the healthy glow that resulted from last weekend’s supercharged morning workouts and nighttime mischief-making has officially worn off. Our skin could use a little well-timed pick-me-up. Luckily, a new generation of concealers, created with tired eyes and long days in mind, is here to help. From Bobbi Brown’s Retouching Wand (capable of erasing dark circles with the click of a button) to Giorgio Armani’s Compact Cream Concealer (sleek enough for the tiniest party clutch), here are six next-generation formulas that do more than just cover up.

What’s the Best Beauty Product to Keep at Your Desk? The Ultimate Checklist of Workday Staples

desk beauty

In the midst of a nationwide heat wave this week, you may find yourself feeling somewhat aesthetically challenged. After braving hair-imploding humidity levels and makeup-disintegrating temperatures en route to the office, you arrive safely—only to experience the kind of deep-freeze air-conditioning more commonly encountered in a cryotherapy chamber. The result is dry skin, chapped lips, and highly confused strands that look more bent out of shape than winningly beachy.

Fortunately, a few well-edited beauty staples—tucked within arm’s reach or stashed in a sunny makeup case—will have the situation under control in no time, while a dash of signature perfume or a whimsical hay-and-bamboo-scented candle brings the essence of summer straight to your desk. That’s why, for a breakdown of the true essentials worth stockpiling this season, we turned to Vogue’s own editors. Here, they share the products they consider every bit as essential as Post-Its and a 4:00 p.m. shot of espresso.

The 19 Best Girl Boss Beauty Looks: From Sex and the City to Empire

Kim Cattrall in Sex and the City

Yesterday the trailer for Office Christmas Party debuted featuring Jennifer Aniston looking cool as a cucumber, not a flatironed golden hair out of place as her colleagues fall to pieces at their holiday bacchanalia. It’s Aniston’s third consecutive turn as the head of her office, fresh off her role as Dr. Julia Harris, DDS, in both Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2.  And in the midst of the Democratic National Convention’s historic Hillary Clinton nomination, perhaps there has never been a better time to celebrate women in power—their pulled-together looks as demonstrative as their politics.

In Hollywood’s version of art imitating life, Aniston joins a league of trailblazing strong female leads who have shown us what it looks like to take charge at work. On both the small and big screens, a few simple hair and makeup codes nonverbally communicate control under fire. With an immaculate brushed-back updo, Christina Applegate shoots straight to the top of the corporate ladder as a high schooler-in-disguise in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead simply because she looks the part. A crisp haircut turns Melanie Griffith’s professional fate in her favor in Working Girl. Salma Hayek’s mob boss in Savages would be nothing without her severe bangs, and Rugrats power player Charlotte Pickles flexed the importance of a no-nonsense business ponytail long before it became the Céline woman’s calling card.

Complexion-enhancing natural makeup also has its place, with a neutral lip, peachy blush, contour-defining eyeshadow, and, we’re guessing, a swirl of sweat-proof face powder escorting Faye Dunaway, Mary Tyler Moore, and Kerry Washington through any scandal unscathed.

Not that demure is the only route to power. Cruella de Vil and Cookie Lyon’s enviably maintained statement lips and affinity for animal prints illustrate a healthy thirst for proverbial blood in business. For Erin Brockovich and Samantha Jones, flaunting their sexuality via a low-slung blouse or thigh-skimming skirt only empowered them to feel more capable of doing their jobs—and staying one step ahead of the men they were purposefully distracting. Here, 19 girl boss beauty looks that will have you saying, “I’m right on top of that, Rose.”

Alicia Keys Performs Makeup-Free at the DNC—And Makes a Powerful Beauty Statement

alicia keys

It’s hard to imagine a more iconic feminist moment than Hillary Clinton “breaking through” the proverbial glass ceiling at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last night—and reminding young girls who stayed up late to watch that “I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next.” Opening up for Clinton’s surprise appearance via live feed was Alicia Keys, who sang a medley of her power anthems, “Superwoman” and “Girl on Fire.” But perhaps her most empowering statement was delivered without saying a word.

Taking the stage barefaced—not a dab of concealer or a swipe of mascara in sight—with her natural curls bound by a scarf into a frothy cloud, Keys’s unvarnished, come-as-you-are beauty resonated with her raw, emotional performance. It also erased any doubt that her recent essay for Lenny Letter, in which she railed against the cult of physical perfection and vowed to go makeup-free, was anything less than than a sincere rallying cry for self-acceptance. With more than 10 million people watching, what better—or bolder—way to walk the talk?

What to Pack for the Rio Olympics: The Complete Beauty Checklist

olympics

The Summer Olympics are just weeks away and soon, all eyes will be on Rio as athletes compete to take home the gold. And if you’re amongst the spectators who plan on heading to Brazil to watch the Games—while taking up local off-duty sports like surfing, swimming, and sipping caipirinhas—you may face another unique challenge: What to pack for the trip.

To streamline the process, we’ve put together the ultimate beauty checklist, starting with the flight: No overnight journey is complete without a TSA-friendly cleanser, like Givenchy’s powder-to-cream formula, which emulsifies with a splash of water in your hands, or a hydrating face mist to refresh skin upon landing. On arrival, embrace the August humidity with Ouai’s hair texturizing spray for waves that recall the country’s ultimate beach goddess—by that we mean Gisele Bündchen—and don’t forget to throw in a bottle of powerful insect repellant, like Off! Deep Woods.

Kick off each morning with a quick run down the famously body-con shores of Ipanema, monitoring your progress with Fitbit’s Alta fitness tracking device in neoprene blue that’s color-coordinated with the surf. Later in the day, cool off between qualifying rounds with H&M’s coconut-water face mask and a spritz of Coola’s sunscreen formula with organic ingredients. As for makeup? Anything goes in the hedonistic city, but a tube of Topshop’s cheeky red lipstick in Rio Rio promises to simmer by day or by night.

Above, a roundup of essential items you’ll want in your travel bag.

What’s the One Haircut You Wish You Could Pull Off? 18 Fantasy Looks to Live For

Patricia Garcia, Vogue.com Culture Writer

Everyone has a dream head of hair—the sort of hypnotic mane that, once spotted on a runway in Rio or gliding across the Hollywood silver screen, grips you and never lets go. Alas, those head-turning cuts often require real nerve, supernatural bone structure, or rigorous upkeep to truly pull off, making them less likely to occur in our day-to-day lives. So it goes for Vogue’s editors who, when asked to reveal their fantasy lengths, drummed up an avalanche of graphic shapes and romantic colors that, they confessed, may not exactly work for them in the real world (and yes, some of them have tried). From bombshell bangs to a gamine pixie, here are 18 unforgettable styles that are eternally worth longing for. Dream on.

Why Selena Gomez’s New Wavy Chop Will Make You Pick Up the Shears

How to Look Like a Left-Bank Parisienne: This New Makeup Collection Makes It Easy

sonia rykiel lancome

“It’s nice to be playful,” says Lola Rykiel, the consummate Parisienne who is a poster child for the seemingly national impulse to avoid a singular beauty look. “Some days no makeup, some days a red lip, some days a liner—it’s more theatrical and surprising.” This impulsive, uncontrived approach to makeup was inherited from her grandmother, Sonia, of the namesake Boulevard Saint-Germain–bred fashion house for which Lola now acts as communications director. Citing her grandmother’s affinity for the “pretty, sensual, and very much alive” women who pepper Toulouse-Lautrec paintings and reverberated on her runways, it was only natural that one day the label would distill that alluring French essence into a beauty collection.

For the task, Sonia Rykiel artistic director Julie de Libran teamed up with Lancôme makeup guru Lisa Eldridge to develop a well-edited 12-piece collaboration, which made its debut in Vogue‘s July issue. “It’s very Left Bank,” says Lola of the final collection, which features packaging by yet another French icon, the street artist André, who cast each package in iconic Rykiel stripes and graffiti squiggles depicting the accoutrements of the city’s cafe culture.

What’s inside is every bit as modern while remaining true to the house’s DNA: There are watercolor eye palettes arriving in matte and glimmering lamé-shot shades of eggplant, rose, and taupe shadow or, for those who prefer a classic smoky eye, hues of moss, midnight, and silver; cushion compacts filled with rosy blush that’s sheer enough to be foolproof while recalling the flush-cheeked femme fatales of Rykiel’s ’70s heyday; and playful lip crayons that look made for writing a billet doux in bold red pigment on a lover’s mirror before zipping out the door, while nail colors come in a spectrum of red, white, and blue, punctuated with one delightful off-kilter khaki shade. Departing on a note of mystery? It’s the French girl way.

The Sonia Rykiel x Lancôme collection debuts August in stores; currently available online; lancome-usa.com

Introducing Dry Masks—The French Girl Skin Phenomenon That’s About to Hit Stateside

Razors Can Be Chic! Meet the New Shaving Staples That Will Upgrade Your Bathroom Game

shaving

I have never owned a women’s razor. Even from the very beginning (a bare-bones silver Gillette Sensor Excel, circa late 1990s), my minimalist-leaning tastes led me to the men’s aisle and far, far away from anything resembling a pink plastic plaything. There was the spare Lucite-handled Pecksniff’s razor (since discontinued) that I inherited from an old boyfriend; I later made space on the shower shelf for Harry’s first-generation Winston razor, in a gleaming chrome finish. It’s not that I necessarily forsake all models thoughtfully created to suit the contours of a woman’s body. I just want one designed in the spirit of, say, Charlotte Perriand, the great 20th-century modernist partial to tubular-steel furniture and ball-bearing necklaces.

Which is why Mave, a new shaving collection spotlighted in the August issue of Vogue, is such a refreshing addition. Launched by Marisa Newman, a former gallerist who laughs that her lifelong interests have been “art and depilation,” the six-piece line elevates the basics, beginning with the custom razor—a sculptural, easy-to-grip white resin object that bears a striking resemblance to Brancusi’s marble Bird in Space. While the design celebrates form, the blade is all industry-tested function: After considerable market research, Newman manufactured her razor to fit Gillette Venus heads, which she buys in bulk and handsomely repackages in slide-top paper boxes (at no extra cost), effectively bypassing the locked cases at the drugstore. That refined sensibility extends to the rest of her ritual, which includes a chamomile-laced scrub, a body oil with soothing arnica and aloe, and a shave cream featuring a gentle coconut-derived surfactant. Of course, she, too, borrows from the boys: There’s a British-style shaving brush made with cruelty-free synthetic bristles that mimic classic badger.

Fortunately, the shaving landscape is fast evolving, and it’s increasingly feasible to assemble a handsome arsenal—for him, for her, for everyone. Here’s our guide to the new essentials, complete with an exfoliating wand for bikini season, a lemongrass-scented shave lotion, and the latest Winston razor, now with a rubberized grip for smoother sailing.

Is Clean Eating a Myth? Chrissy Teigen Sparks a Twitter Health Debate

chrissy

Chrissy Teigen has made a career out of her playful approach to food. Her Cravings cookbook, which launched earlier this year, is touted as a collection of realistic recipes for people who love every kind of dish from fried chicken to Brussels sprouts. So why has Teigen become the center of a dieting controversy? This weekend, the model and new mother responded to a fan’s Tweet about her avoidance of the term “diet” saying, “I dunno. I’ve always had an issue with the word diet. I like ‘eating light’ or clean eating . . . I dunno why!” As straightforwardly innocent as her reply seems, it incited a fully-fledged Twitter war over the definitions of the terms “diet” and “clean,” the difference between them, if any, and which camp Teigen belongs to, whether she likes it or not.

Teigen’s reticence to align herself with the term “diet” is understandable. Though the word merely refers to the food that a person eats regularly—vegan, gluten-free, Mediterranean, and American could be considered diets—it has become culturally synonymous  in some circles with the restriction of calories as a means for weight loss. “Clean eating” also took its fair share of hits in the feud—called out for being elitist, and, perhaps worst of all, a blanket statement that means absolutely nothing, or, as one person put it, a “myth.” But, according to nutritionist Mikaela Ruben, the term “clean” has a very clear translation and use, and embraces a remarkably democratic approach.

“Clean eating is a diet where you understand what you’re putting in your body,” Ruben says of consuming bread, butter, cheese, and beyond that contain only what they naturally should (i.e. organic milk or a natural yeast starter) and nothing they shouldn’t (for example, artificial hormones in meat, or chemical stabilizers that you can’t pronounce). “My definition of [the term] is chemical-free, nothing refined,” she says of a commitment to consuming and preparing simple foods like fruits and vegetables that are chock-full of nutrients for nourishment.

For Teigen, cooking John’s Fried Chicken at home gives her the ability to know exactly what’s in the flour, butter, chicken, and more that she puts in her body. Calorie restrictive it certainly isn’t, but it’s clean in that there’s nothing confusing about the contents of the dish. And one look at the model’s trademark bombshell curves may say more about the benefits of that kind of transparent, ingredient-focused eating than any Twitter battle could.

The 10 Best Lightweight Moisturizers for Surviving Summer’s Home Stretch

moisturizer

It’s the last week of July—and what started out earlier this summer as a healthy vacation glow is officially starting to resemble a perpetual sweaty sheen. It’s time to switch to the lightest moisturizer possible, and thanks to the latest breakthrough textures, there’s no shortage of good options.

Korean import Belif’s Aqua Gel Oil drenches skin in a waterlike consistency that absorbs instantly, meaning it doubles as a perfect primer for makeup; meanwhile, Dr. Jart’s refreshing formula is packed with water droplets that burst upon application, infusing skin with a surge of hyaluronic acid. If it’s your T-zone that’s having issues, Eve Lom’s Rescue Oil Free mattifying moisturizer can be used on your forehead, nose, and chin—it contains salicylic acid to absorb oil and shrink pores. Trying to keep hyperpigmentation and sun spots to a bare minimum? Neutrogena’s cultish Hydro-Boost formula now comes packed with SPF 15 for an added daily dose of protection. Here, 10 moisturizers that have you fully covered for summer’s home stretch.

How Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid Do Festival Beauty—With a New York Twist

Gigi and Kendall

In recent years, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have led the pack of camera-ready neo-bohemians at Coachella in headscarves and twin topknots. But as any supermodel knows, location is everything: For the Panorama music festival on Randall’s Island, New York, yesterday, fashion’s favorite BFFs recalibrated their look with a sleek new Manhattan minimalist twist.

Neither braided nor adorned with flowers, their hair was simply swept up and out of way, with Jenner staying cool thanks to a swingy high ponytail, while Hadid tucked an easy knot under a baseball cap. Both managed to make a head-to-toe black outfit heat wave–friendly, flashing their gleaming legs as a reminder of why a good body oil is the ultimate summer beauty helper. And while synchronized sunnies mean that we may never know if their makeup included a smudge of kohl, the takeaway is this: Good shades always beats the best eyeliner—at least until the sun goes down.

Kate Moss and Charlotte Tilbury Craft the Ultimate Girls’ Night Playlist

charlotte tilbury

What does Kate Moss smell like? That burning question has at last been answered by Charlotte Tilbury, the British makeup artist and Moss’s longtime friend, who used the icon as her muse for Scent of a Dream, a heady blend of amber and tuberose that’s Tilbury’s first-ever fragrance. Here, as further tribute to their freewheeling bond, Moss and Tilbury have shared their ultimate girls’ night playlist—and from the classic cool of “Purple Rain” to the headbanging strains of Blondie, it’s as epic as you might expect. Consider it the ideal auditory pairing for the equally infectious scent it inspired.

Your Moment of Zen: 6 Models Prove Why a Seaside Dip Is the Ultimate Beauty Reset

Lily Aldridge

If the relentless heat has you contemplating a move to Sweden, there’s really only one way to hit the reset button this weekend: Abandon all hair and makeup efforts and get your overheated self to the closest body of water.

Here to offer motivation to pry yourself from your air conditioner: the Insta model set, who has seemingly staged a mass exodus to the crystal shores of the Mediterranean this summer, sending postcards from paradise by way of floating selfies that celebrate everything that is good and right about a seaside escape.

Lily Aldridge found her moment of Zen by drifting peacefully in Greece, while Sofia Malamute was the picture of serenity resting in a Capri cave. Lindsay Ellingson took a refreshing dip in St.-Tropez, while Fernanda de la Puente took a break from the thumping beach beats in Ibiza.

Here, 6 buoyant reminders why it’s impossible to feel stressed—or, for that matter, too hot—when it’s just you and the water.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Gigi Hadid, Candice Swanepoel, and More

@angelcandices

Whether trailing in the wind over the sun-washed plains of Kenya or adding extra texture to the mud flats of Ibiza, this week’s best beauty Instagrams were all about the hair. Sofía Sanchez de Betak opted for a plaited blonde ponytail for her safari on horseback, while Sofia Malamute posted a snap of Jamie Bochert and Mica Arganaraz in the midst of a mud bath, their sludge-slathered skin furthered by tousled brunette manes that afforded the duo an unexpected camouflaged factor.

Soon-to-be-mother Candice Swanepoel struck a blissed-out sunset pose on a scenic deck, baby bump protruding forward while the model’s beachy blonde mane streamed behind in the breeze. Models Coralie Jouhier and Jordan Rebello shook out naturally curly manes, each with an impossibly arresting texture. Sisters Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjärta twisted their equally aspirational lengths into slicked-back buns composed of coiled locks, putting a welcome spin on the classic, ballerina-inspired topknot. And August cover girl Gigi Hadid shared a selfie featuring her trademark bombshell blonde, taking a cue from Selena Gomez with a set of vintage-inspired, fire engine-red nails and a matching red pout that played well with her sun-kissed complexion. Because when it comes to the new era of It girl, classic and contemporary seem to be one and the same.

Wet Hair, Don’t Care: 6 Dampened Styles to Get You Through This Weekend’s Heat Wave

Bella Hadid

Wet hair, don’t care, is our new motto for the forthcoming weekend. With temperatures that are, in a word, fiery, and creeping ever-upwards around the country, we’re looking to flee our air-conditioned abodes in favor of bodies of water in which to cool off, soak, splash, and embrace the rays sans bitterness. Fortunately, some of our favorite celebs have offered up lessons in damp hairstyling, optimal for post-swim activities.

Bella Hadid grabbed an ice cream cone—another necessity in the coming days—with her recently submerged lengths combed into a sleek and polished topknot that read more runway than boardwalk. Taylor Hill topped off slicked, pigtail plaits with a N.Y. Yankees cap, while Bambi Northwood-Blyth honed her island princess persona with a tiny braid woven across the crown of her ocean-drenched updo.

If seaside glamour is more your style, look to Romee Strijd, who simply brushed her dampened blonde lengths back to reveal a pair of glitzy earrings. And the au naturel award goes to Sara Sampaio, with a casually raked-back bun that artfully augmented her barefaced complexion. Here, six styles designed for summer swims.

Everything I Know About Beauty, I Learned From Absolutely Fabulous

DJ Tokimonsta Shares Her K-Beauty Secret to Stage-Ready Skin

Photo: Courtesy of TOKiMONSTA / @tokimonsta

As the city begins its flight to Randall’s Island to ring in the first Panorama, our minds have turned to the many clever takes on festival beauty we’ve seen so far this season. Bringing one more idea to the table this weekend is Jennifer Lee—better known as Tokimonsta—the electronic artist and frequent Grimes collaborator, whose flawless skin is a master class in taking Korean beauty to the stage.

“I love Korean beauty because my skin’s so sensitive, and those products tend to be milder,” says the Los-Angeles-born-and-bred DJ. “You also have the benefit of feeding your skin while covering it.” Lee, whose moniker is a nod to her Korean-American roots (toki means rabbit), has long relied on products flown in from Seoul by her family—think AmorePacific essences and toners, packed with calming water lily and red ginseng root extracts. “Right now, [it’s] the BB cushion,” she says, of the BB-soaked sponges that originated in Korea. For shows, Lee exchanges sheer formulas like Laneige for the more mattifying SanSim compact. “A lot of BB creams don’t cover that well, since the whole point is to make your skin look natural, so I switch to SanSim, which is very high coverage,” she says.

Then, there are a few all-American staples thrown into the mix—Urban Decay’s 24/7 gel eyeliners in a rainbow of shades and Estée Lauder’s Double-Wear Maximum Concealer which, Lee says, “can cover anything”—that make for a compelling, cross-cultural blend of beauty know-how. “What’s important to me is to make sure that I’m matte,” she adds. “When I’m on stage, especially outdoors like at Panorama, I try—to put it bluntly—not to look greasy.” Truly, a beauty rule that’s universal.
