DJ Tokimonsta Shares Her K-Beauty Secret to Stage-Ready Skin

As the city begins its flight to Randall’s Island to ring in the first Panorama, our minds have turned to the many clever takes on festival beauty we’ve seen so far this season. Bringing one more idea to the table this weekend is Jennifer Lee—better known as Tokimonsta—the electronic artist and frequent Grimes collaborator, whose flawless skin is a master class in taking Korean beauty to the stage.

“I love Korean beauty because my skin’s so sensitive, and those products tend to be milder,” says the Los-Angeles-born-and-bred DJ. “You also have the benefit of feeding your skin while covering it.” Lee, whose moniker is a nod to her Korean-American roots (toki means rabbit), has long relied on products flown in from Seoul by her family—think AmorePacific essences and toners, packed with calming water lily and red ginseng root extracts. “Right now, [it’s] the BB cushion,” she says, of the BB-soaked sponges that originated in Korea. For shows, Lee exchanges sheer formulas like Laneige for the more mattifying SanSim compact. “A lot of BB creams don’t cover that well, since the whole point is to make your skin look natural, so I switch to SanSim, which is very high coverage,” she says.

Then, there are a few all-American staples thrown into the mix—Urban Decay’s 24/7 gel eyeliners in a rainbow of shades and Estée Lauder’s Double-Wear Maximum Concealer which, Lee says, “can cover anything”—that make for a compelling, cross-cultural blend of beauty know-how. “What’s important to me is to make sure that I’m matte,” she adds. “When I’m on stage, especially outdoors like at Panorama, I try—to put it bluntly—not to look greasy.” Truly, a beauty rule that’s universal.
