The Best Curls of All Time: From George Washington to Rihanna

Rihanna

Calling all curly-haired girls: If your New Year’s resolutions include abandoning an overwrought beauty routine in favor of going natural, you’re in good company. Throughout history, wavy manes have been synonymous with unbridled sexiness, voluminous kink, and the willingness to take up a bit of extra space.

The aspirational afros rocked by sixties activist Angela Davis and seventies vocal powerhouse Chaka Khan were a study in liberated texture. And rockers Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix wouldn’t have had the same careless allure without their irreverent spirals.

In more recent years, Sarah Jessica Parker immortalized Carrie Bradshaw’s c-c-c-curly hair on Sex and the City. And musicians Rihanna and Lorde have sported springy, supersize looks. Here, the 37 iconic men and women who make complicated strands a no-brainer.
