Imagine a world where your summer “no makeup” beauty routine actually requires no makeup. It’s possible. I discovered the secret earlier this season, when on an unseasonably chilly spring evening, I swung into midtown salon, She Winks, to sample a full set of eyelash extensions. After an aesthetician painstakingly glued single hair fibers to my own lashes for an hour, I left feeling eerily doll-like. But the next morning, in the daylight of my apartment, I stared at my own reflection, baffled. Despite my post-winter pallor and lack of makeup, I looked ready for the day—almost glowingly so. If an eyelash curler and a swipe of mascara are known for opening your eyes and making you look more awake, lash extensions give the appearance of eight hours of sleep, a balanced diet, and an imperceptible face lift.
It’s an effect makeup artist Vincent Oquendo is familiar with. “Eyelash extensions minimize your makeup process,” he says of the instant wide-eyed gaze characteristic of his model clients. Lasting up to three weeks, “they’re a great alternative to mascara in the hot summer months—one less thing you have to worry about.” Better yet, you can wear them in the ocean without accidentally emerging with a black stream of makeup running down your cheeks.
If you’re thinking about trying lash extensions, Oquendo’s advice is to start small. “I like medium or short eyelashes,” he says, adding that having them applied only on the outer half of your lashes “can totally reshape your eye.” Fair-haired women should consider a lash tint prior to their extensions, to color-match the finished product.
Though rendered unnecessary, your makeup routine will be supercharged by your new fringe. With that in mind, I’ll be ditching my tinted moisturizer for the next month and booking regular appointments at the nearest salon. When people ask what’s different, I’ll simply bat my lashes.
