Nominees hoping for a Tony this Sunday can take a cue from 2013’s Best Actress in a Musical winner, Patina Miller: Great performers give everything they’ve got—and they make sure they’ve got the endurance to do it. To stay in stage-ready shape, Miller heads to New York City’s Aerospace up to eight times a week to hone her skills on the jump rope. “I have run, danced, but [jumping rope] is one of the biggest fat burners—it can torch calories and push your body to become strong without bulking,” says Miller of the addictive workout she discovered last year.
It should come as no surprise that the chameleonic actress, who is as comfortable on Broadway as she is on the big screen (she plays the ongoing role of Commander Paylor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay sequels) and on television (as Daisy Grant on CBS’s Madam Secretary), was quick to pick up the new sport. Watching her crisscross, side jump, and whip through double turns, you might think she spent her formative years in the boxing ring instead of at Carnegie Mellon University. “I’ve been working on doing 100 double turns [in a row] for an entire year, and I finally got it three weeks ago—it’s really difficult.” Next on her list of goals, she says, is thirty minutes of uninterrupted jumping, but it’s the mental challenge that keeps Miller coming back—she’s even known to slip in mini five- to 30-minute sessions on the Madam Secretary set in her trailer. “[Jumping] keeps me active and fit, but it’s the mental part that’s the hardest part—it’s a good exercise for calming the mind.”
