Ryan McGinley’s Feel-Better-Naked Playlist

If you believe the Malcolm Gladwell popularized philosophy that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in anything, then photographer Ryan McGinley has more than passed the benchmark in creating an environment for people to find ease in nudity. It’s a skill he attributes as much to the fail-safe playlist of danceable tracks that he brings to every shoot as he does to his decade-plus in the field. With cuffing season on the horizon, causing singles to couple up and head indoors away from winter’s chill, what could be more necessary than a reliable musical icebreaker that’s all but guaranteed to make you comfortable no matter how much clothing you’re wearing?

“Dancing to loud music is key to losing yourself in the moment,” McGinley says of the quickest way to loosen up before you disrobe. We asked him to share the dexterous blend of pop, hip-hop, punk, hard-core, and country—“songs people really know the words to”—that is proven to make everyone come undone.
